But do I need to go through security control at any point in VIE, or is it just like a same-terminal domestic transfer in the US?

No worries on transfer time, just curious on the logistics.
You will need to go through security since you will be arriving from non-EU airport. You are correct that you don't need to clear immigration in VIE though.

I had a non-Schengen to non-Schengen transfer at VIE in June and although we were funneled through security, the checkpoint was not manned and the scanners weren't on.

Is the security check immediately after arrival or before departure for the connecting flight?

Well, that's up to you. You should arrive to non-EU arrivals and you can either spend some time there or proceed directly through security to departures. Generally speaking, there is not much to do in Arrivals part of terminal, so I would proceed directly to security and Departures (there is plenty of shops and restaurants there and you can also purchase access to fairly decent lounge).

Depends on which gates the departure is from. If it is D-gates, there will be security even when transiting non-Schengen to non-Schengen.

G-gates, then there is normally no security, just get upstairs and quickly walk through as mtimmer experienced.

I see how it works now after taking a closer look at the terminal map for gate G. Arrivals on level 2 with non-Schengen departures on level 3.

There may or may not be a security control to go up to the departure level, but once up there I'd be free to grab something to eat and then board the connecting flight to TLV without going through another checkpoint.

Vienna transfer

Hi guys,

I also have a question. I'm arriving in Vienna from an EU non-Schengen country and going to a non-EU Schengen country.
I have separate tickets for the 2 flights, since they're made with different companies. The connection time between the flights is 55minutes. Will that be enough to go through all the formalities, assuming I only have hand luggage?
I would very much appreciate a quick answer.
Thanks a lot.

You should be fine, if:
a) your flight arrives on-time
b) you already have BP for connecting flight

You will only need to clear security (or not, according to posts above yours), which is usually breeze. VIE is very efficient for connections.

Thanks a lot. I'll be flying in with Austrian Airlines, so I should be ok with the arrival time.

Hi, I skimmed the thread and it looks like a 35 MCT for Schengen flights is possible however I have a LAX-VIE-DUS itinerary with the VIE-DUS flight OS153 35 minutes after LAX-VIE. Is this even remotely possible? The flight is already booked. Currently in economy, trying to change to business.

thejaredhuang, VIE-DUS sees several daily flights, hence even if you missed your immediate connection, you'd be accommodated on the next flight. I'd try to seat close to the doors (1L) so you'd be out with the first bulk of people. You'll have to clear immigration before your onward flight to DUS.

35 minute layover in Vienna?

Looking to take Malta Airlines - Malta to Vienna and then Austrian Airlines Vienna to LAX. The layover in Vienna is only 35 minutes and that worries me, since getting back to Los Angeles from Vienna won't be easy if we blow this.
Called Austrian Airlines and they claim the minimum turnaround time for Vienna airport is only 25 minutes,so we should be fine. they claim all immigration/security screening will be done on depart from the Malta airport.

Does such a short layover time for this international flight sound okay with you? Will our baggage most likely make it?
I'm tempted not to stress out and just go Lufthansa with a long layover in Germany

I've done shorter connection times in VIE, but on OS-OS flights - Domestic to International.

They waited for us at the exit of the plane of the first flight, whisked us in a special car to immigration and customs and drove us directly to the new flight plane. We ended up being the first ones to board the plane.

I was very impressed with the efficiency of the operations and just wished I listened to the driver telling us to leave all the carry on in the car (and thus would have made the security check past immigration and customs much easier).

The assumption of course that it is all on ONE ticket.

I didn't think this would be an issue, but now that I see an FT thread on it, I may as well ask I have 1h15m to make a connection from WAW-VIE (on OS), which I believe is a Schengen flight, to VIE-CMB (non-Schengen), also on OS. Any chances we get held up at security? We arrive in VIE at 4:35 PM and depart at 5:50 PM.

There is no security check in VIE as WAW is in the Schengen area:

- just follow signs to G gates (this might require backtracking via Duty Free shops - don't be confused - this is how they designed the new terminal - to give you an opportunity to shop - of course for your convenience)

- go upstairs

- clear Immigration

- go to gate - you are done

Lounges are behind Immigration. As 1K you should be directed to the Senator lounge.
