Booking class Y/B and possible upgrade

I am planning to fly from YYZ to WAW on either Lot or Lufthansa and pay full fare (class Y or B). What are the chances of getting an upgrade to business class? Do I need to ask for one, or will I get one automatically based on availability? Also, which of these two airlines do I have a better chance of getting an upgrade on? Thanks!!

If you want the upgrade, either pay the difference between Y and C - or use miles to upgrade.

You will not get any comp upgrade without coach being oversold - and then, FF status with the airline comes into play, too.

Check the difference to the fare for business class. It might not be very large, so you might want to buy a business class ticket in the first place.

Unlike some us-based airlines, paying a high economy fare or having status does not result in automatic upgrade.

Thanks for the info. The reason I'm asking is we have a family situation and my insurance is paying for an economy ticket, so I was thinking if I get a full fare economy, I may be eligible for an upgrade. So if I fly a US-based airline like United, I might be eligiible for an upgrade?

Ask your travel agent to give you two invoices: one for full fare Y (to be handed in to the insurance) and a second invoice for the difference between Y and J (and pay this one yourself).

I have often done this when customers only want to pay for Y travel but I fancy J... The difference between full fare Y and discounted J is often negligable (sometimes J is even cheaper..)

Thanks! That's a good idea. I'm going to go to a travel agent, since I'm having to luck trying to find any applicable fares. For eg. Lufthansa wants $3100 for economy B and over $8000 for business! But hopefully I'll find something.

I don't know your insurance, but as far as I know you are virtually always obliged to get the damage (here: costs for the ticket) as low as possible. Booking an economy Y-class ticket for ~5000 Euro may not fulfill this requirement...

A note on upgrading full-paid economy: Most of my economy tickets have booking-class B and I have some status at LH. I never got an upgrade, even on oversold ecnomy-flights. I guess, SEN/HON first seems to be the rule.

Thanks everyone. The feedback has been really great!!

I think I found a good business class fare. Its $2600 on LOT (fare DSLO). Now I'm trying to find a similarly priced econ fare on the same airline. Can anyone tell me where I can check fares by booking class? I used flyaow.com in the past by some of the tools aren't working any more.

Also, can anyone recommend a good travel agent in Toronto. I usually book my own flights, but I will need someone to make two invoices, etc. and I'm not sure where to go. Thanks again!!!

Sign up at AUA AirManager (free). Instead of making a regular booking, choose fare display. The booking class is not always obvious, but if you hover your mouse above the link to the right of the fare, you can see the fare included in the link. The first letter of the fare is the booking class.
