LH/OS Seating Thread

Since many many questions on the M&M forum relate to seating questions I thought I would post a thread with all the seating info I have collected this winter schedule flying LH & OS. This thread is not meant to remain static so I encourage you all to contribute and Kiwiflyer & I will update the entries. I've left out LX for the time being.

To start the thread off, I have first posted the basic data here. The finer points (fleet details, fleet average age) will be added step by step

Official Seatmaps can be found online here:

LH:http://www.lufthansa.com/online/port...nodeid=1770492
OS:http://www.aua.com/at/eng/Austrian/Fleet/
The infamous generic seatgurexperts:
www.seatexpert.com
www.seatguru.com

Seatexpert still has the A310 and B742 LH seatmaps, although both are out of service since atleast 5 years:
So if you are nostalgic, go here:
http://www.seatexpert.com/_LH742.html
http://www.seatexpert.com/_LH310.html

Glossary of terms:

ASR: Advance seat reservation
HFTBY:haven't flown this bird yet, so no personal comments
Seating preference codes
NSST Non-smoking seat
NSSA Non-smoking aisle seat
NSSB Non-smoking bulkhead seat
NSSW Non-smoking window seat
RQST Specific seat + seat number

News:
Some more info can be found in Amadeus GGAIRLHSEAT, a copy of which can be found here

General:

ASR Policy:
Intercont flights: ASR for all classes except SEN priority rows
Europe flights:
LH: only C seating available for ASR
OS: ASR available in european Y on mainline OS

LH started to offer ASR on their website when you book online. Existing reservations of any kind don't offer ASR on the web site if you already booked it somewhere else. If you hold a confirmed reservation, call any LH call center and you can ASR your seat if you fulfill above conditions.
OS has no ASR facility while booking tickets via aua.com. You can however select a seat while checking in online.
Service:

Shorthaul: begins in first row of cabin
OS Longhaul: begins from last row of cabin
LH longhaul: Y & C begins from two points

Seat blocking:

LH blocks seats for elite (SEN/HON) ASR and some seats can't be assigned until 24h before departure so that they can be assigned to UM, INF and disabled pax.

Usually LH tries to block the seat beside a HON, SEN, & *G in any class of service, space and availability permitting. On short haul business class, LH will block the seat beside a passenger sitting in C. This means a SEN/HON usually has a complete 3 seater to him/herself, if seat blocking kicks in.

Short haul seats:

The new seats installed on LH's 32S and 737 aircraft have a tray installed in the middle seat and the middle seat can be narrowed to allow wider aisle and window seats. If you want to convert your seat row in such a way (of course no one should be sitting in the middle seat) lift the headrest cover, locate an oval button, press the oval button. The armrest will fold away and the additional table will appear out of the back rest.

How do I know which config is operating for my flight?

LH usually sticks to their planned aircraft, but last minute aircraft changes do happen.

To see what config has been scheduled for your flight you have following options (listed in order of my preference):

1. Book a dummy ticket on the LH.com booking engine. After providing your name and contact details, you will be able to select a seatmap of your flights.

2. Go to a travel site (orbitz.com, expedia.com etc) and pretend you are booking the flight. Wait until you get to the screen where you can choose a seat. That feature will show you the seatmap of the flight. The Amex CTS site is an Amadeus booking engine, which is also the native GDS of LH, so it is the most accurate.

Example:If you want to check if you have a B74 or the 74P config, just look for out if the C class send in row 27 or 25 in the seatmap of your flight. If row 27 is there, your flight will most likely have the 74P layout.

3. Subscribe to expertflyer.com. They have a feature where you can pull up the seatmap of a particular flight from the GDS they are connected to.

4. Get the KVS tool from http://KVS.UnrealNetwork.com/Tool/
This tool links to the booking websites that offer online seatmap during booking. This will save you a few clicks. If you subscribe to the Platinum edition, you can download the seatmap directly in text format.

5. Get the Amadeus booking code of your reservation if you have already made a booking and look up the seatmap of your flight using www.checkmytrip.com by clicking on the seat number shown there. This will of course only work if you already have a ASR. If not, pick up the phone and call LH as described below.

Purchasing an additional empty seat

LH like other airlines allows you to purchase an additional seat beside you for extra space or to carry oversized cabin baggage. The ticket is booked in the same PNR under the <your last name>/CBBG and no pax related charges are applied.

ASR Rules for SEN/HON to get access to elite/preferred seating

Exceprt of OS' SEN pref seating:

Preferred Seating for Senator-Passengers
A new functionality will be available in Amadeus effective today, 12.10.2004. A few seat rows on all wide-body aircraft (A340, A330, B777 and B763) will be blocked for passengers holding a Senator Card.
The blockings will be implemented in both Y and C compartments. Those seats will be marked with “V” in the Amadeus seat maps.

Bookings of Senator Passengers
If your passenger is holding the SEN status and his/her card number is entered into the PNR as SSR FQTV, just book the desired seat.
E.g. *SSR FQTV YY HK/ LH222015979293149/1
If the letter V is not visible in the seat map as the FQTV data matches the criteria of Senator status.
Book the seat as usual and it will be confirmed immediately (native entry: ST/1A/S2). The adjacent seats may be assigned to passenger(s) accompanying the Senator passenger provided they are booked in the same PNR.

Bookings of Non-Senator Passengers
The V seats cannot be booked for other customers. If you request such a seat for a non-Senator passenger, the seat request will be returned with the advice code UN plus SSR OTHS which shows: SSR OTHS 1A VIEJFK087C15SEP.SEAT NOT AVLB

Implementation Process and Existing Seat Reservations
Passengers holding already a reservation on a seat which becomes a V seat will be reseated by the system.
The reseating process will be started after the data base updates of the master seat maps have been finalized.

Buckel2 notes following in this post:

LH intercontinental: Preferred seats, marked by the letter V in the seat map, can be assigned to Senators and HONs travelling in economy class and to non status passenger booked in the higher economy classes B or Y.
LH continental: Preferred seats can be assigned to Senators or to customers having a first class intercont flight on LH in the same PNR.

OS intercontinental: Some seats in C (eg. 1A&C) can only be assigned by OS staff to SEN/HON.

Preferred seats are not available for Star Gold Members anymore. The Elite seats become available for all when the flight is open for checkin (usually 22-24h before departure). Exit rows and infant seats cannot be requested for phone checkin. See post #288 for details.

Exit rows are available for M&M elites (SEN/HON) Exit row ASR is possible only for SEN/HON.

General comment from curt:
There is only one A346 config at the moment. All 10 planes are configured 66C/279Y. With the delivery of the additional A346, LH will introduce F on some of these birds. Those will be configured 8F/60C/238Y.

whiskey_sk comments about the C section:
My personal preference is 11K. That cabin is really small, almost like a private jet with only 12 pax. Out of the 3 times in 11K 3 times 11G was empty, as people probably dislike this cabin because of Y pax passing through during boarding and the fact that you're the last one for service in C and some menu options might be gone by the time the cart get comes to you.
During the flight the 10/11 cabin is very quiet, I did not notice extra cart traffic towards the Y cabin like mentioned for 34V in post #5.
Smilingboy comments about the Y section:
The only exit row seats are 26AC and 26HK. This is an overwing exit. Lots of legroom, but not unlimited like some exit rows in some aircrafts (meaning if you stretch out your legs you will easily touch the seat in front of you). Fixed armrests, so slightly narrower feel than normal seats. There is no real window. Only if you stretch way forward can you look out of a very small, round window.

It is possible that the middle seats 25DEFG and 26DEFG (I hope I have the row numbers exactly right) have slightly more space as well. There are markings on the floor directing people through these rows in an emergency. But if there is more space, it is only one inch or so more than in the other rows.

Otherwise, I liked the downstairs washrooms - seems much more spacious than normal washrooms. You also have a drinking water tap there.

Curt has written up a summary of all 343 configs here:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3352577

34P is the most common config of 343 and is common to the 333s in layout (the 333s have new(er) seats in Y and different lavs)

ATR 42

smiling boy adds in post #407
I think I last flew the ATR 42, and there was no exit row. Business class was in the back, and seats 1DF were backwards and facing seats 2DF. You couldn't get 1DF assigned though IIRC. 2AC were terrible bulkhead seats with even less leg space than on the 32S or the 737.

OS new C guide

OS has launched a new config for their 777 and 767 aircraft which will primarily affect the business class cabin.

Which flight has the new C while the transition is going on:
http://www.aua.com/de/deu/BusinessCl...New+iFrame.htm

How to spot new C by looking at the seat map? (see post#2)

The new C seat maps are here:
http://www.aua.com/de/deu/BusinessCl...tual/cabin.htm

The old C map for the 767 is here:
http://www.aua.com/at/deu/extras/Pop...ap+767-300.htm

So if the seatmap for C shows 4 rows, its old C anything else (5-6 rows) is new C

Os A 330-200, 340-200, 340-300

The two 340-200 owned by OS are now history and were picked up by the french airforce.

The 340-300 will go to LX this year along with one 332. The remaining 332 will go to TP. LX and TP benefit from the commonality they agreed on in the Qualiflyer alliance days.

Sad to see the OS 332 go away in favour of 777 and 763s. For reference I've kept the comments on the Airbus in this post

These 342s are on sale by OS and should leave the fleet after the summer schedule. The 342 was originally built for range and has less seats than the 343.
IFE in the OS342 is similar to the LH old C planes. C has a few movie channels in rotation/repeat, Y gets to see a set on overhead TVs.

Exit row: 26
Bulkheads: 1,10,26

Best seats:
1: bulkhead with no one reclining into your space, easy to get out even front window seat
5: service starts here, so best choice from the 4-5 entrés
10: bulkhead with no one reclining into your space, but fixed armrests, LCD TV in front of you, which is too bright to view properly as it aims to serve the 4-5 rows behind you

26 AC HK: exit row, but smaller (practically non existing) windows
36 DG: more legspace as config changes from 2-4-2 to 2-3-2

Avoid:
5B: pursers office right behind you
25ABJK: toilets all around
26: DEFG: Babies! Only bassinet point
40: galley traffic

Airbus A340-300 (343)

OS has two 343 in their fleet. OE-LAK's IFE is set up just like the 342s, the OE-LAL IFE is set up to be like the more 'modern' 332s.

Exit row: 28

28 AC HK: exit row, but smaller (practically non existing)windows

Airbus A330-200

C: 1-4
Y: 10-41

The 332s in the fleet are about 5 years old and carry the state of the art IFE of that time (6-8 video channels, games, sms/email etc). Very similar to the LX/SN 332s as they must have been purchased in the qualiflyer era of OS. Plus they have foot rests on all seats except the bulkheads.

Exit row: 27
Bulkheads: 1,10,27

Best seats:
1: bulkhead with no one reclining into your space, easy to get out even front window seat
