To blame a nonexistent hacker with aimless ill intent ... well those are media stories.

My sincere condolences!
I love Australia's nature but there's a hefty price to pay for that.

Back in the early days of my travelling career I was sat in a departure lounge checking some emails when a stray ball of paper hit my head. It was thrown from some distance by a man who was aiming at a bin but had turned around and walked off before even checking it had reached its intended target. I was going to throw it back with some hot sauce before I noticed it was a print out of his LH booking. I was able to log in to his booking and was moments from cancelling it outright (potentially leaving him stranded in Kiev) but got cold feet at the last minute as I was convinced my actions could be traced back to me. It would have been so simple though...

As consumers we have no rights and no capability of protecting the data on Lufthansa system. Regardless how one obtained PRN - this number is on every public travel document - paper or electronic. Nearly anyone in the travel industry has access to it. In most EU countries any lowest ranking law enforcement, bailif, court janitor have access to it without a court of prosecutor's order.
It is LH that permits anybody to access and alter reservations based on unsecured practically public two pieces of information.
Besides - had it not been for greediness of airlines in imposing unearned fees and penalties for "change ticket" we would not have this discussion - wouldn't we?

No one expect LH had any interest in cancelling the OP's ticket. Flight went Y0 which indicates that very likely hefty IDB compensation is due.
I understand that this is not hard evidence but if you have demonstrated ill intent (LH management) and a strong motive, I'd not waste time on blaming Raëlian, Bilderbergs, Illuminati, Anonymous, the CCC, or the Patriarchy for the action.
