Premium Economy to Business upgrades on LH

With PE coming to LH (LAX-FRA route in my case), I was doing some homework into using miles to upgrade to J.

The Lufthansa page on the subject (http://www.miles-and-more.com/online...l=en&cid=18002) only notes the miles needed from G and E classes.

Does that mean upgrading from N is not permitted? I tried calling the US M&M service desk and they were clueless ("You cannot upgrade from Premium Economy to Business, I'm sure of it").

Thanks

Just as certain Economy and Business booking classes cannot be upgraded, as confirmed here:

4. Upgrade awards
4.3 Special upgrade terms and conditions

Upgrades with LH, JP, EN, OS, OU, LO and LX are not possible for some particularly favourable offers.

On intercontinental flights, this applies to the following booking classes with:
Lufthansa (LH) K, L, N, P, T, Z

It is a bit silly that you can upgrade from S to Biz, but not from N, when the latter costs probably 50% more than S.

Is this reasonable or what...?

Europe - North America oneway upgrade

S > Business : 50,000 miles or 2 eVouchers
N > Business : not possible
E > Business : 30,000 miles or 1 eVoucher
G > Business : 20,000 miles or 1 eVoucher

Yes, but it's still a "deeply discounted" fare in its respective class.

(Never mind that the discounted Y+ on other carriers is usually cheaper than the deeply discounted one on LH.)

Below is a slightly more complicated list sorted by fare (excl. fees&taxes) and I put the miles that are required for the Eco-Biz upgrade or PremEco-Biz next to it. Some things make not much sense, e.g. that N class tickets cannot be upgraded, although S fares for ~1/3 of the prize are or that 50k are needed to upgrade an M fare, whereas a cheaper E fare only needs 30k...

It's pretty strange that LH.com is offering my a r/t in PE LAX-FRA-LAX with the outbound in N for ~$950 and the return in E for ~$1200. I'd happily pay the extra ~$250, but for the outbound, E appears to be $2700!

Interestingly, i booked a W flight and upgraded to N for a flight early Dec. This was shortly after PE was bookable.

I spoke to Lounge agent and SEN line and both confirmed I could upgrade with another evoucher to C; I was even waitlisted for a few weeks.

However, at one point my waitlist got removed and an evoucher (that I had used to upgrade to PE) reappeared on my account. Still I am listed as booked in PE and seat selected in PE...

Looks like a free upgrade to PE (thanks LH!) but no furthr upgrade possibility to C, contrary to earlier info by LH.

I guess I'll just book the PE r/t and upgrade the direction I can. Good opportunity to try out the Y+ and J product on the A380.

How many birdies are out there which will have PE but no new Biz yet? Or will that be an absolute rarity?

One would hope that these apparently obvious holes in the upgrade policy will be fixed with time, but I have given up trying to figure out what it is LH is attempting to accomplish with their pricing and fare rules.

I think it's just A380s LAX-FRA-LAX so my understanding is those are all new biz. Could be mistaken though.

Cause upgrading from PE to old Biz makes very limited sense to me.

I got upgraded on BA from PE to CW about 6 times this year .. and only enjoyed it as a gesture. When you want to work. the PE seat is IMHO superior to the ultra-narrow stretcher and even for sleeping, I always woke up with leg and back pain in CW. So I would not pay cash for the privilege...

It certainly seems like BA and Oneworld appreciate your business more than Lufthansa does.

It only started very, very recently ... and I am just a stinkin' AA EXP.

Almost looks as if BA figured out that I am flying them an awful lot.

Fortunately, AA has not yet realised that I am flying them maybe twice a year ...
