So if you are OK with connecting in IAD, ORD, or LAX you could enjoy the new B748 and then connect with UA for a short-ish flight to DEN.
I would try to minimize your time on domestic UA (because even old C is better then domestic UA F). That leaves ORD or LAX - which then becomes the question of would you rather minimize total travel time (ORD) or maximize your time on the new 748. I usually avoid ORD connections because of the frequent weather problems so I'd pick LAX (even with the crappy terminal change from T7>TBIT which requires you exit security and take a little stroll).

BA and their daily nonstop out of DEN.

Looking at a random date in Oktober, it looks like neither F or J class is outfitted with the latest one LH is offering.
Nov 7, 2014 is NEW F from den-fra. My wife and I are currently on UA F from sfo-fra and I'm going to watch that LH flight like a hawk to try and switch to LH F. It's currently at F7 and I hope it stays that way to increase our chances of getting two seats to open up.

Your chances are slim, even when they don't sell a single seat they sometimes don't release any...

I'm considering DEN-FRA connecting through either SFO or LAX. I notice that there are a couple of flights on United with potentially better times for me. Ticket will be purchased on Z class and I'm a 1K:

1. If I take my chances with United Z (hoping to get uograded to First) I understand I can't use a Global upgrade to First with Z. Am I at least eligible for a complementary upgrade based on availability? Do they fill three cabin first with complementary upgrades or do they do this differently than for two-cabin domestic?

2. Would you take Lufthansa Business Class on a new double-decker or United First in a 777 (definitely don't want to do United Business on a 777!)

1. No 'complementary' upgrades on LH. If you buy full J ex the US you get an upgrade to F(O) at the time of booking. Contact your TA for that. The F seating on 744 flights operated as two class is sold at 700$ a seat at the time of booking and may be available for free when you check in. You can ask, but chances are slim.

2. LH C on a 748i is better than UA C, but slightly below the UA F product.

I notice that SFO-FRA is on an A380 and LAX-FRA is on 747-800 - is there a clear winner for Business on one or the other?

The 747-8 is much more comfortable for long haul travel than the 747-800.

What in the world is a 747-800??? Can someone define the difference between the 747-8i and 747-800? I must have been living in a cave during the -800's inaugural.

With enough Jack Daniels, even a 747-800 will start to show up on the route map.

Ouch! Sorry for the mistake, just edited my post.

In my defense (if there is any) I replied too quickly and repeated the error of acousticbiker. Won't happen again!
