Good old Ruhnau was already engaged in some nasty currency hedging tricks, so I guess it is not that bad for Lufty. After all, hardly anyone pays less than Lufty for their birds (maybe also because they buy the wrong ones )

The resale or remarket value will ultimately destroy or even kill the major A380 operators, well there is only one, so EK will bite the dust or should better start printing some money. Too many uncertainties and too many financial obligations tied to all EK A 380 deals with significant doubts about the resale value of outdated airframe and engine technology after the initial deal period plus the guarantees.

In general, if you think about the reputation of LH and LH Technik, it gives you a good idea how other airlines do when it comes to reselling their birds.

I wonder whether it will really be EK's problems or of some leasing companies or aircraft fonds... Does anyone know how many of their A380 are actually OWNED by EK?

They are completely stripped out. The only thing left are the log books/maintenance records. No seats, no trollies, etc. Lav accessories (soap, towels, etc) was still supplied for crew. Only one medical emergency kit is left should the pilots need it during flight.

Seats, depending on condition are kept in HAM or FRA and used as spares or destroyed. Probably no sense in flying 'dead' weight and burning the fuel. Speaking of fuel, they drain the fuel from the aircraft and give it to farmers in the area. Very little goes to waste.

I did not see xgcy cards....I looked!

I also learned that the cabin windows are impervious to quite a variety of ammo. I'll have the opportunity to report back first hand at some point.....

I tried to link an image from my site, but it was way too big and blew up the page - but here is a link that covered D-ABIB in TUL:

I BELIEVE that they are self-financing their toys.

Heck, I would have paid something for one......I have a vision for a retirement cabin or insane asylum.......

Thanks. That was an interesting read. In 2012 LH took an extraordinary charge of charge of 102 million € for write-downs of retired aircraft and another 27 million for impaired aircraft and repair parts (see note 9 on page 150 in the German-lauguage edition of the 2012 LH Annual Report).

Even more interesting to me in the same note, though it was not really material, was that LH took a 2 million € write down on the "Lauda" brand name that isn't used anymore...funny the things one finds lying around still on the books sometimes...

If you are interested in that kind of stuff, I strongly recommend Delta's annual reports from 2001-2010 including their brankruptcy (exit)

Just stunning...

Emirates is in bed with almost everyone regarding the big bird, ranging from good old fan favourites like KFW, Helaba, Coface or Doric not to mention the Saudis and Chinese.

Some of the deals are pretty innovative, not as nice as Lufty's Jolcos denominated in Euro (), but still solid.

But they are financed, not leased correct? at least that was my impression.

It is a vast combination of everything you can imagine..., partly, of course, off balance sheet.

Normally, you find all the information in official financial publications, well in the Gulf region, those documents tend to be a bit shorter...

If you google Hannover Leasing Flight Invest 50 and Emirates, you get an idea how ´they´ financed one big bird. @:-)

Are any of these birds still headed to Gary Indiana to become aluminum foil?

I did a double take a year or so ago when we were driving past on the tollway one day and out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a bit white plane, with a blue tail containing a yellow circle. I thought "Lufthansa? At Gary? A charter? To GARY?" On the return trip I paid closer attention and indeed it was LH. A little Googling turned up that it was on the way to the scrap heap.

I'm actually a bit surprised that they fly them all the way to the US to become scrap.

Some insight on the residual value of A340s:

http://www.businessweek.com/articles...is-not-a-lemon

The author mixes up the guarantees given by Airbus when selling the 345/346 vs the 77W and the gas guzzling 343s but it is some background...
