OS back to 'Tokyo' (no mention if NRT or HND) and introduces CPT:
Austrian Airlines to Launch Flight Service to Cape Town and Tokyo
Destinations
• Austrian Airlines will expand its long-haul portfolio in 2018 thanks to its additional Boeing 777
• Five weekly flights to Tokyo in Japan starting in the summer of 2018
• Twice a week to Cape Town in South Africa as of the winter 2018/19
• Premium Economy will also be offered to both destinations
Austrian Airlines will include two new long-haul destinations in its portfolio starting in 2018. As of May 15, 2018, it will offer up to five weekly flights to Tokyo, and also fly to Cape Town twice each week effective October 27, 2018. The airline will operate a Boeing 777 for both flights. The new destinations are made possible by the addition of a “Tripple”, as this wide-bodied aircraft is called in the aviation business. Austrian Airlines will integrate the new jet in its long-haul fleet in 2018.
“We are pleased to be able to renew flights to Tokyo earlier than expected. We temporarily terminated flight service to Tokyo in September 2016 because the route had become unprofitable as a consequence of the economic downturn and currency devaluation in Japan. However, market conditions have substantially improved in recent months, which is why we see potential once again. Demand for this route does exist”, says Austrian Airlines CCO Andreas Otto. “Cape Town represents an expansion of our offering to long-haul tourist destinations in the winter”, he adds.
The Boeing 777 aircraft has a seating capacity of about 300 seats. At present, Austrian Airlines operates six Boeing 767 and five Boeing 777 jets in its long-haul fleet. The additional Boeing 777 increases its long-haul fleet to a total of twelve aircraft.
In addition to Economy and Business Class, passengers will also already be able to fly in Premium Economy to the new destinations (but first bookable as of September 2017). Starting this autumn, all long-haul aircraft will be gradually remodeled to enable the installation of Premium Economy seats. Passengers flying in “Premium Eco” have their own seats featuring a larger reclining angle, more seat spacing and a broader seating surface. Moreover, the screen for on-line entertainment is bigger than in the Economy Class, and catering is upgraded.

Flights from Vienna to Tokyo will only be offered in the summer flight schedule on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The flight duration to Tokyo at a distance of more than 9,100 kilometers is about 11 hours. Is OS back in Japan?
I just booked an award ticket ( MP miles ) with OS to LAX via VIE for June 2018.
Last I knew is that OS pulled out of Japan sometime in 2016, so I am quite surprised
and thrilled to see them return. When are they coming back? Couldn't find anything
in the forum.

On ATW today:
Lufthansa Group subsidiary Austrian Airlines has confirmed it will relaunch flights to Tokyo, Japan, and Cape Town, South Africa in 2018.
Beginning May 15, 2018, Austrian will offer up to 5X-weekly Vienna-Tokyo Narita services, as market conditions have improved substantially.
<snip>
The Tokyo service will only be offered in the summer flight schedule.
The carrier also plans a return to Cape Town, South Africa, with 2X-weekly services from Oct. 27, 2018. “Cape Town represents an expansion of our offering to long-haul tourist destinations in the winter,” Otto added.
The new destinations are made possible by the addition of a sixth Boeing 777-200ER in spring 2018. The additional 777s will be on an eight-year lease contract with Irish lessor AerCap, representing an investment value of €60 million ($68 million), including conversion costs.

Anyone know who flew the aircraft before?

Has Austrian previously announced the introduction of premium economy? I hadn't seen that before. It sounds like the B767 will receive three rows of six-abreast premium economy seats and the B777 will receive three rows of eight-abreast.

I was actually on the NRT-VIE leg the day before the last flight in September last year. The FAs were literally crying, they loved TYO so much. Happy days now I guess

According to this article, Lufthansa plans to begin nonstop service to San Diego in 2018. It will fly 5 times a week.
Lufthansa also said it would launch 5X-weekly Frankfurt-San Diego (California) services in summer 2018.
Condor began nonstop service this summer, flying three times a week. It's a seasonal route for them.

Because San Diego has so few international flights, the immigration process is quite quick. There is a nice United Club for LH passengers to use on outbound flights.
