Red face Revamp of IFE for LH/LX/OS starting in 2014

Read this today:

Code:
The fifth star on the horizon
New IFE for better Skytrax ranking

Skytrax’s conclusion about the film choice
was a clear one: Lufthansa does not offer
enough films on board and the menu
navigation is out of date. The auditors
also said that offering less entertainment
in Economy than in Business
Class was no longer in
keeping with the times.
Bernhardt Seiter is head of
cabin facilities & IFE
within Product Management.
He reveals what
Lufthansa is coming up
with to achieve the fifth star.

Different technology is required before we can offer more
film choice”, says Seiter. “We will be installing this
technology with the retrofit”. He adds that the current number
of films is simply limited by the server. The servers for “etes”,
the old IFE, can store a maximum of 30 films and 40 TV programmes.
The system on the A380 and Boeing 748, Panasonic’s
“eX2”, can already store more: around 50 films and 110
TV programmes. Once “Rave”, the new IFE, is on board,
Lufthansa will be offering 100 films and 200 TV programmes
on both systems. This is the same as the sort of entertainment
offered by British Airways or Etihad. In the future, Seiter adds,
the entertainment system will feature both Hollywood blockbusters
and timeless classics.
The first aircraft has already undergone retrofitting work and
started operating in mid-June (see page 18/19). At the end of
the retrofit project, two-thirds of all long-haul aircraft will have
Rave, and one-third will have eX2, consigning etes to the
history books. “Then we’ll have a state-of-the-art IFE system”,
he says, “that will be as user-friendly as the iPad thanks to its
touch-screen technology. This will also take pressure off the
crews, because it signals the end of “dark flights”, when the
inflight entertainment system stops working”, says Seiter.
Further advantages: Rave is only half as expensive to buy and
maintain and weighs only half as much. More films, he adds, also
mean more advertising revenue, which reduces the costs. There
are also synergy effects: Swiss is flying with eX2, while Austrian
Airlines and Brussels use Rave. “So we have more purchasing
power”, he explains. In the past, Lufthansa negotiated with the
major studios itself and Spafax clarified the rights with the
smaller studios. “It’s impossible to do this in-house with this
sort of volume; you need a large number of editors to screen and
select the films and conclude the contracts”, says Seiter. In the
future, Spafax will assume responsibility for the entire film
selection for Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Swiss.
Another feature will be the option of feeding live TV directly
into the IFE monitor via FlyNet – a move that will also come
once the retrofit has been completed. The idea is that customers
should be able to watch the 2014 Football World Cup in Brazil
via live TV on board as soon as all aircraft have FlyNet and eX2
or Rave.
In the continental fleet, Lufthansa is responding to the trend
among guests to bring their own device on board. “Then we
only need a server on board, no cables and no screens”, explains
Seiter. The Munich test run of the Lufthansa Systems “Board-
Connect” product on the A320 known as “Papa-Papa” went
well. The options offered by the wireless IFE were popular
among passengers. A decision on whether to roll out this sort of
technology is set to be made soon. Over the next few years, the
Internet is also to be connected to this sort of system, as with
FlyNet. “We are on the right track to achieving the fifth star”,
says Seiter.

> We are on the right track to achieving the fifth star

With that hub? With a Biz which is phase shifted -2000 days to the competition? And for LX with 10 abreast on a 777? ?

They are not serious about this. That is merely an attempt to mollify concerned shareholders.

But then if QR can make it, sh###y seats seem no obstacles to a high ranking and with MH in it, apathetic service is no hindrance either ... so why not ...

While they´re improving the IFE, could they please get rid of the terrible music commentary? Listening to it once may be interesting (sometimes, but not when I´m trying to nap), but having to listen to it in both English and German is just terrible.

New inflight entertainment starting 4/1/14

I saw this on the lh app on my iphone. Is this going to be available on lh 434 from muc-ord in mid April? 434 is an airbus 340.

The details were vague IMHO. What can I expect in economy?

Also, I've been unable to find information on food service for this flight. Is there a link to find out more about the food service?

The ITB press release said "from summer" so I doubt mid-April will have such a service- best to load up your tablet prior to the flight or follow the old fashioned ways and buy a good paperback prior to departure.

You are confusing things... Boardconnect is only for A32S aircraft:

The new IFE is operational in aircraft with RAVE and ex2 (A330, B748, retroffited 343 and 346):

Be better prepared - don't fly them anymore.

Even though compared to LX Y, LH Y is quite heavenly, especially on the 380.

Seatguru is terminally unusable on LH. It features seats which do not exist, misses seats which do ... not worth spending time on there for LH.

But yes, in all likelihood you will experience an old bulky PTV with limited options.

April 1st 2014 MediaWorld Update

I was on the Lufthansa website and it said that on April 1st they were announcing updates to MediaWorld AVOD. Does this mean we get more movies, music and features? It said something about the addition of new content.

I hope the AirShow Map stays the same as I love watching Air Show.

On my last Munich-San Francisco flight on the Airbus 340 I really enjoyed the AVOD system as I had on their Airbus 380 and 340. I must say Lufthansa is better than other airlines such as Air Canada Rogue where you must provide the device in order to watch the IFE.

Looking forward to testing out the new AVOD selection come April 14th.

The ex2 on the A380 doesn't like the increased offering at all:

IFE on A380 still defective

The new IFE programme recently installed on board our eX2 fleet is not yet functioning smoothly following extensive testing. The reason is that the IFE range for April contains much more content than the previous range. The high volume of data has overloaded the system. Since becoming aware of the problem at the end of March, Lufthansa has been in continuous contact with the manufacturer Panasonic in order to find a quick solution. Every effort is being made to remedy the problem so that a wider programme range, as originally planned for April, will hopefully be available from May at the latest.

In the meantime, Panasonic has created a new substitute programme package for us. This contains the complete WatchEnjoy range and has been in use in the A380 fleet since 7 April. As of today, ‘Mike Kilo’ and ‘Mike Bravo’ have the new content on board. This programme is also being installed on the other aircraft in the eX2 fleet. The substitute package is expected to function reliably from the coming weekend.

MA, MC, MD and ME will continue to have the Panasonic substitute programme on board, as the seat monitors on these aircraft are an older version.

CI/L
Makes one wonder how SQ/CX/EK manage to put so much content into their ex2 equipment.
