Lots of availability in Eco, so they don't have to upgrade anyone for free. As a result, they have little inclination to take your money to pick you over someone else - because noone has to be upgraded. :-)

In such a situation, I would expect the offer only to be accepted if it is significantly higher. OS wants people to buy Business in the first place, and not book Eco and then upgrade for less.

This is a quiet high bid. You should have very good chances for an upgrade. Most people don't offer more than €250 to €350 for an upgrade and still sometimes get it.

Made a lowball offer of $405 for IAD-VIE next week. Looking at the seating chart, there are lots of open seats in Eco so I don't expect they'll take me up on it anyway. I don't mind too much being in the back if the seat next to me is vacant at least.

Offer accepted on IAD-VIE for $405. First I got an email with a PDF of the receipt showing my credit card had been charged, then an hour later I got an email saying I had been upgraded.

It seems OS has so fare made 6000+ upgrades using the system and are very surprised what high bids people put in.

Thanks.
(I know my questions are quite vague)
I assume you mean 750 for one leg. If that is the case then that is quite a high bid. Other airlines, like BA/AA now offering pretty deep discounted business tickets. I just did a search on BA and you can get VIE-YYZ business for 2100 EUR.

Cheapest ticket on Austrian.com is 730 Eur, your offer 555*2 = 1840 EUR.

BA more epxensive but those are J and I tickets and it is guaranteed to be a business.
Austrian is a bit cheaper, direct flight, P ticket and you might get stuck in Y

6000 upgrades is not a lot. The scheme now runs for approx 180 days, making it about 33 upgrades a day. It is available on all long-range flights as well as on flights from and to Amman, Astana, Baghdad, Baku, Erbil, Cairo, Tel Aviv, Tripoli and Yerevan -> I didn't count but that must be more than 33 flights a day.

Hence, less than one person has been upgraded per flight. Which could mean that biz is full anyway all the time or that people are actually not offer enough or not aware of the program.

Considering the cost for the program (marketing, IT, manual (at least partial) clearance) I don't know how profitable it is (or how required it is in case biz is full anyway).

I don't know- if the average upgrade is 300 EUR then there is an additional 1.8 million EUR in "incremental" revenue. Not too bad really.

and taking in consideration that probably less than 10% of the 6000 Smart Upgrades were customers that would have bought, originally, a biz class ticket, it is indeed not bad.

I guess customers based their bid in the price they pay for they eco ticket vs a cheap biz class ticket and probably OS is ready to accept a smaller premium for the unsold tickets in C.

My son bid $500US for IAD-VIE and it was accepted. Since his employer paid for his Y ticket, he wasn't concerned about his bed possibly being high.

He flew yesterday, and when I sent him an e-mail asking how the flight went, his response was "I'm not sure how I will ever fly coach on a transatlantic flight again."

I flew IAD-VIE 2 weeks ago and I certainly understand his sentiments. The seats appeared quite new, and service was excellent. I've flown C on a number of carriers, and OS C is definitely near the top among those carriers I have flown.
