Is M&M as bad as it seems?
I'm on United MileagePlus, my partner is now on M&M after switching from bmi's DC.
FRA-DBV gave over 600 miles on MP, 150 on M&M. Despite the huge difference, you can get away with a round trip within Europe on MP with 25000 (normally 50000) miles, whereas it is 30000 on M&M! Even if you don't get a saver at 25k and have to go with the 50k, the difference in miles awarded seems pretty shocking. Did I make a mistake putting the bf on M&M? That's four flight segments done there which is a shame, but better to leave ship for a better *A now if needed... or am I missing something? Thanks! |
If your bf is mostly flying on (discounted) Y fares, then yes, you made a mistake.

Well we are not super frequent flyers (anymore) so I figured just going for the main programme with the airline we'd be flying the most would do. They all seem to be kind of similar these days. Just wasn't expecting it to be that bad!

If you don't fly that frequent and then only on cheap intra Europe flights you won't get a usefull mileage balance for a long time. M&M might be usefull if you can get 30 flights/legs a year so you qualify for FTL. At least you get lounge access at some places, business check in and some extra luggage.

Unless you'll be flying on LH enough to get status, LH is a terrible place to put miles; expiration, bad mileage chart loaded with lots of fuel surcharges and fees, lots of booking classes that get limited mileage.

If I'm not mistaken, both UA and AV require a minimum number of flights on UA/AV t be taken.
Look at SK as well. |

I think it quite unlikely that UA or US would enter bankruptcy in such a way that they completely eliminate the value of their FF miles as part of a liquidation- simple Chapter 11 has kept the frequent flyer programs around. Avianca you might have a point about- I could see a Latin American *A airline exiting messily like Mexicana did, and that should be accounted for in your earn/burn strategy. But in 10 years, who knows where LH will be if EK and FR keep taking away the top and the bottom of their customer base, and the best strategy is "earn and burn" anyway. Mileage always loses value over time. |
