It is not going to be easy.

Public Bus it is a 60-90 minute journey. They open at 10 so I'd leave by 8.

Taxi- I'd budget 45 minutes each way.

Rental car- same but need to factor in time to return car.

If you go the rental car route there are rental cars available at Union Station.

Thanks. How much is the cab fare?

I honestly think once I consider cabs, then car rental is more likely going to be cheaper.

Yes, rental car is almost always cheaper in LA than one or two taxi rides. Even factoring in 15 dollar parking at the Getty.

Estimated Fare & Tip from http://www.taxifarefinder.com

$63.43

Estimated using Los Angeles, CA taxi rates. The trip is 17.3 mi and will take 24 mins. This fare estimate includes a 15% tip, as is customary in this region.

PS- 24 minutes is a very optimistic estimate- unless you are talking about a Sunday?

Did you say train to Chicago?

Yes, cabs are expensive in LA. Even a quick jaunt from my home to the airport 10 miles away costs me $33 after tip.

Rent a car. Parking isn't free though at the Getty.

Huh? It isn't 15 dollars? Why does it say it is on the website?

www.getty.edu/visit/hours/

"Admission to the Getty Center and to all exhibitions is FREE, no reservations required. Parking is $15."

Oh. Sorry. I feel like we're going in circles here.

I'm agreeing with you. I respond in the negative to the negative statement. "Parking isn't free." "No, it isn't." That's agreement.

I then went on to say, at least entrance into the building is free.

If you do rent a car give yourself at least an hour and a half to get back in the afternoon. I live near the Getty and the 405 is undergoing major construction and during some days, a lane is closed and midday traffic through the area is heavy.
You can also follow @I_405 on twitter for more up to date postings on the construction
