There is a nice, new VIP lounge open at SJO. It has satellite TV, internet, bar and food, separate smoking area, air conditioned, nice furniture, etc. It costs $35 for the day - sort of expensive, but worth it if in the terrible teminal for over 3 hours It is on lower level near the smokers bar (below food court).

Davistev : Did you use the lounge? If so, how about a report.

By the way, if you have a stopover in SJO (still a hole of an airport) and have 3 hr. or more, use the "transit" option which allows you to exit and reenter the airport without the tax. Exit is usually quite fast, and reentry through security has been less than 2 min when I have done it. It does take about 5 min to fill out the transit form (go to small office at far left of departure (ticket booths) area).

There is a great Denny's restaurant about 3 min drive (taxi) from airport near rental cars and hotel and casino. Or walk it in about 10 minutes. Take road in front of airport to right and you will see it as you get to the "circle". Great food, service and very comfortable with good air cond. Prices very reasonable and quite a large restaurant. In fact they have Free Wi-Fi if you have your laptop with you. A great place to hang out during a semi-long layover.
Sorry Sapman, I was travelling Business Class on Taca and was looking for the Taca lounge (there is none). I did not enter the lounge.

Yes, the transit option is a good one but your stay must be less than 12 hours to qualify. Airport tax for everyone else is now $26 each. I stayed for 14 hours and was dinged.

Taca airlines up front is still fine but the back of the bus now only has $5 snacks.

I'll take the free drinks in coach over the food anyday, but it can be an unpleasant surprise if you're expecting a meal and they want the five bucks. But it's been that way for a while now .....

And my one and only flight up front (SAL-IAH) beat the pants off CO's FC on IAH-SJO flight (that one I've done a few times up front, and the food is really bad).

The new part of the terminal in SJO is nice, and I always stock up on Ron Centenario at the duty free
