"New" SCL to open 2019
Designs for the "new" SCL have just been released. Capacity should increase from 9MM pax per year to 30MM pax per year; the structure that is now both domestic and international will become solely domestic, and the new terminal will house all international flights:

After the problems at the beginning of this month, it's obvious that the airport is inadequate at peak times/seasons, but I really can't see what they can do on a short-term basis...it will be interesting to see what happens.

Interesting to know.
That'll be fun for the (admittedly few) of us who make connections between our weekly LAN flight and overnight flights out of and into SCL. Arrive domestic (after the PUQ stop) and change terminals for your connection from international (and vice versa).

Quite a bump in capacity. I guess that SCL wants to become a regional hub for flights from Asia on route to other destinations.... (???)

Absolutely. And LAN is playing up their presence (did you know that to fly LA to MVD from EZE they route you through SCL? At least that's all I found on a recent search). Plus with Qantas now flying out of SCL, there are a lot more connecting passengers to other SA destinations. AA has increased frequency of MIA flights, and there is WILD speculation about EK coming in...(can't wait to see the conversation that sparks...)

I'm pretty disappointed that LAN hasn't stepped up it's routes to MVD or even chosen to put in a hub there with the collapse of Pluna. There's no national carrier. LAN Argentina 4M hasn't put in routes either. All the pluna routes to argentina went to Austral and Aerolienas, which is a terrible state of affairs. TAM did add some routes and i think LAN added a flight a day to SCL. Nothing like they should have done. They had a whole market just waiting for them to jump in to and they didn't do it.
