Official Notice: Monorail Opens July 15th

In my email today:

Las Vegas Monorail to inaugurate service on July 15

Launch date set for the world's most advanced public transportation system

The Las Vegas Monorail Company announced today that it will launch service to the public at 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 15. The privately funded $650 million transportation system will run along the Las Vegas resort corridor and connect nine major resort properties and the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The initial 4-mile route will stop at the following seven stations: MGM Grand; Bally's/Paris; Flamingo/Caesars Palace; Harrah's/Imperial Palace; Las Vegas Convention Center; Las Vegas Hilton; and the Sahara. These properties represent more than 25,000 hotel rooms and approximately 4.4 million square feet of meeting and convention space.

We're eager to start carrying passengers on the Las Vegas Monorail, said James Gibson, chairman and CEO of Transit Systems Management, the management firm for the Las Vegas Monorail. This is a very rewarding day for all of us who have devoted years to this project. It's the culmination of years of hard work led by the late Robert N. Broadbent, whose vision will become a reality on July 15.

We're extremely proud of this project and the role it will play in our community. Besides carrying an estimated 20 million riders per year, the monorail is expected to ease traffic in and around the Las Vegas Strip and improve local air quality. It will also be a unique Las Vegas attraction in its own right, Gibson added.

On Wednesday, July 14, the first passengers will ride the Monorail during media and VIP events. Passengers will include local and state dignitaries, community leaders, and Nevada media.

The Las Vegas Monorail will be a source of civic pride, and a tremendous service to the roughly 36 million people who visit Las Vegas each year, said John Haycock, chairman of the board of Las Vegas Monorail Company. Completing a project of this magnitude; entirely with private money and coming in under budget is a tremendous accomplishment, especially since this is a unique system that is the most advanced of its kind in the world.

For the first 60 days, the Las Vegas Monorail will operate daily from 8 a.m. to midnight. The cost to ride the system will be $3 each way, or less. Daily, multi-day and multi-ride passes will be available for purchase. After the first 60 days, the monorail will operate daily from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.

About the Las Vegas Monorail

Led by the late Robert N. Broadbent, a former Clark County Commissioner and community leader who originally chaired Transit Systems Management, the Las Vegas Monorail is the result of a decade-long effort by entrepreneurs, business leaders and elected officials who successfully raised $650 million from revenue bonds, which will be supported by monorail fare revenue.

The privately funded first phase of the Las Vegas Monorail connects nine major Las Vegas resorts with more than 24,000 hotels rooms. This initial route runs from the Sahara to the MGM Grand hotel-casinos on opposite ends of the Strip, with stops at the Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas Convention Center, Harrah's/Imperial Palace, the Flamingo/Caesars Palace and Paris/Bally's. Plans call for the monorail to eventually connect downtown Las Vegas and McCarran International Airport.

One-way fare will be $3 per person, with round-trip fare costing $5.50. The monorail plans to run 20 hours per day, from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., 365 days a year.

The monorail system is owned and operated by the Las Vegas Monorail Company, a non-profit corporation whose board is appointed by Nevada's governor. The monorail company has engaged Transit Systems Management, LLC to administer all monorail-related contracts for the non-profit corporation.

What kind of odds are the sports books posting right now?

Of course, I'm just bitter because it's opening exactly two months after my last trip to Vegas in a long while.

Miss Hoover: I hear those things are awfully loud...
Lyle Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud.

Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs?
Lyle Lanley: You'll be given cushy jobs.

At $3/head it is no bargain, particularly if you are in a group. Cabs might still be cheaper. I wonder when the'll extend it to the airport? I hear the cabbies are fighting that tooth and nail.

They should. Now it will be harder for them to rip off unsuspecting tourists. Vegas cab rates are also one of the most expensive in the country.

I made the mistake of asking the taxi driver last week when it would be extended to the airport. He started yelling as if it was going to be the end of the world. I really dont give a dammnn how much a LV cab costs, or why tires dont last in the "Vegas heat", how expensive gas is now, how poorly his customes tip etc. And when he added his $4 version of the NEW airport access tax he eliminated any tip from me. He is probably still yelling.

For those wanting all the details, head to www.lvmonorail.com.

I'm glad it's opening when it is...will mean it'll be operating when I'm there. Hopefully they've finally gotten all the bugs worked out of the system. It's only what, six months behind schedule? And the construction company was being fined something like a million dollars every week or something?

However, for those that don't know, there won't be a station at McCarran International Airport for quite some time. I've been keeping an eye on the monorail progress given my upcoming trip, and given what's stated on their website and mentioned in the Las Vegas Sun here's the story.
  • The system is being designed in three phases. The first phase is what is now open, including the stations running along the main Las Vegas strip.
  • The second phase will place stations downtown, including Freemont Street. According to what I recall reading, this won't be operational for another several years...perhaps 2006 or 2007.
  • Finally, they are contemplating a third phase. They haven't even confirmed it'll be done. This phase would include a station at the airport and several other locations. If they give the green light, it won't be in operation until sometime near 2009 or 2010.

Now does that make sense to anyone? Wouldn't you put the station at the airport almost as a phase "1-B?"

In LAS of all places...the place where you need a rental car the least.

Probably an issue with the Taxi Drivers, though those I talked to about it didn't seem too concerned. The pricing doesn't give a whole lot of incentive to stay away from a taxi if you're in a group of 3 or more, and the shuttles from the airport already compete with the taxis. I'd stick with the way I travel now at McCarran, which is shuttle if I'm by myself, and taxi if it's 2 or more.

It looks like the Sahara and LV Hilton will be the biggest winners in this. Anyone know how close to these hotels it is, or will it be a long walk to the train?

I was at the Las Vegas Hilton last year and the platform is practically attached to the hotel.
