Deteriorations at Monte Carlo

I recently stayed at the Monte Carlo, where I have stayed many times in the past. The gift shop no longer sells newspapers. I do realize that many people read newspapers online. I sometimes do that myself, but I enjoy reading a print newspaper with my morning coffee. I had to go to the Aria to buy a paper; at least one can walk to Aria entirely indoors, which was a blessing in the late June heat outside.

I have previously posted that the MC has removed coffeemakers from guest rooms, and they provide only one chair. But at least they did bring in another chair when I requested it.

Not sure I'd label it "deterioration" when a gift shop no longer sells newspapers; perhaps there is a limited supply of free papers at the elevator lobbies? (USA Today will practically give them away to hotels to pad circulation numbers.)

It's kind of like saying the auto parts stores have deteriorated because they no longer sell buggy whips.

No free papers either

No, the MC discontinued free newspapers quite some time ago. So now one simply can't get a newspaper anywhere in the MC, neither free nor for money.

I enjoyed your funny comment about auto parts stores not selling buggy whips. But I think print newspapers are not quite in the same category. Yet!

Did they lower the resort fee, which typically/historically included a newspaper?

I didn't think so.

I just got back from the Aria and one of the most relaxing things for me is to read a newspaper by the pool every day. If they didn't sell them at Aria I would honestly find another hotel. Thankfully, they sold the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Las Vegas Review Journal.

I just got done staying in a renovated Park Room. We were on floor 22.

The floor was well done, low ceilings tastfull green carpet and decor.

I liked the room, it had a king bed, facing the window and we had a view of TMobile arena. There was a table, a couch and a chair. It was a "nice looking room". The TV has built in Bluetooth for streaming music. The counter under the TV has cool fold out trays for space saving. Black out blinds worked great.

There were issues however. No ironing board, but there was an iron. In the bathroom towels were on the small sink. There was nowhere to stack towels once you started using the sink. The worst part of the room was that ours had a connecting door. You could hear everything in the room next to us. For some reason the neighbors opened their door at 1am and our room was flooded with lights from around the door frame.

The final thing about our room was that it seemed very stuffy. The AC was set at 65 deg and it never felt really cold. This may be subjective as well, but there never seemed to be fresh air. All I wanted to do was open a window.

You can do that in rooms at the Mirage.

No newspaper? How about this ... stayed Aug 13-15th. This started at 5:30am!!! Room 3-234

No apologies from any of the staff in any conversation. Tripadvisor would not let me post the video in my review so please spread the word that NO ONE should risk staying here during construction. And I will never stay again thanks to the non sympathetic staff.

Did you ask for for the manager on-duty and insist on complete refund of whatever you paid to be there, along with a future generous comp or did you just fuss?

I DM'd you the Monte Carlo CEO's @Email address.

What did you think of it 10 years ago?

10 years ago I thought it was a massive dump surrounded by far better options. Today I think that is even more the case.

But I'm sure there are lots of folks who like staying there - to each his own. But if you want meaningful advice you'd be better served asking specific questions - opinions tend to vary widely on FT.

They are in the middle of major construction. There's no pool, the casino is crammed into a reduced space, most restaurants are closed. How cheap would it have to be to make you even consider staying there? There are so many other options in Vegas.

If you're at an $87 rate, which is what I see on Kayak, then stay at Treasure Island instead for the same rate, or Bally's, Flamingo, or Harrah's for cheaper.

TI especially would be a better experience, IMO.
