Parts of Las Vegas Boulevard closed after Cosmopolitan fire

A fire broke out Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the Cosmopolitan. The blaze was at the Boulevard Pool on casino's rooftop.

A "ridiculously fast"-spreading fire at the Bamboo Pool at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas today clouded the Las Vegas Strip with plumes of smoke, sent at least one person to the hospital and caused closure of a main portion of the Las Vegas Strip.

A witness who was on the Bamboo Pool deck during the blaze told the Sun that employees believe the fire was started by a cigarette tossed from one of the hotel's top floors, or possibly discarded by a guest at the pool, into a bush on the pool deck.

The witness said the fire consumed half of the cabanas around the pool in less than a minute. Guests were running and screaming as the fire spread "ridiculously fast," and the entire pool deck area was quickly evacuated.

Clark County spokeswoman Sandra Baker said crews with the Clark County Fire Department extinguished the flames, trying to clear the smoke and checking the adjoining building to be sure the fire had not spread.

I see Willie Nelson is paying at the Cosmo tonight. Perhaps he flicked a doobie to the pool deck. (kidding)

2 were taken to the hospital. There is a fire station at the rear of the Cosmo. I am glad this fire got put out quickly and no one was seriously hurt.

Speculation: The fake palm trees used as decoration around the pool did not meet fire retardant standards. Sounds very much like that club fire on the east coast from a few years ago, where pyrotechnics ignited highly flammable materials that shouldn't have been there.
