Vdara Suite or 2 x SLS Rooms?
I'm planning a trip for a buddy's 40th birthday. So far we have a Vdara Suite booked at the Vdara hotel.
I noticed that the SLS is having a promo (likely because it is new?) where if you buy 2 nights the third is free. On top of this promo, Cheaptickets.com is also offering an additional 20% off. The net result is that the 2 rooms at the SLS would be about the same price as the Vdara suite.
I'm curious to get some advice if it's worth taking two rooms at the SLS versus taking the Vdara Suite? I should also note that I am Mlife Platinum (through my status with Hyatt) so I am entitled to a possible room upgrade at checkin at the Vdara.
The SLS seems to have very mixed reviews and it appears to be at the southern end of the strip. Not the best location.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I think a 40 year old (and his friends) should have his own room. I think all of your concerns about SLS are valid, but if the price is right the own-room principle should prevail.

Northern end of the strip. But yeah, not the best location.

The time you spend walking from SLS or taxiing, you'll end up wasting a ton of time and money. Better to go to Vdara. Also, the SLS rooms are tiny. For 40th, don't cheap out and get something nicer. However, I don't think you need the Vdara suite, a regular Vdara room would probably suffice if you're on a budget.

SLS seems to be in serious trouble. They have completely closed their buffet and many other food/beverage outlets are no longer open 7 days per week.

As a Vegas Veteran I highly recommend staying at Vdara where I stayed last time I was there two years ago. We were upgraded to the 1 bedroom Penthouse Suite(although not guaranteed) The Vdara offers a mini kitchen with a stove, fridge and dishes so you could at least cook one meal to save money
The pool at the Vdara is nice and the location is perfect. Like others have stated the SLS(which I thought about booking this time until reading reviews and am going to be at the Monte Carlo) was in a poor location and seeing that their buffet closed down and restaurants are not open 7 nights makes me wonder how the rest of the service is.
At least with the Vddara you are getting a smoke free property without a Casino and the Aria is very close. Also the buffet at the Aria is really good.
See if you can partake in any Groupon/TravelZoo Restaurant Deals as well as for shows. Book them well in advance.
