Both the 788 and 789 are J30, but Y is bigger in the 789... IIRC, B788 is Y217 and B789 is Y243
The most important changes are the exit rows and the non-reclining seats just ahead of the lavatories in the middle section.
The easiest way to check if your plane is to simulate a purchase process at LAN.com. The flight listing in the second step will display the aircraft type that is scheduled, including the variant (-8 or -9)
The other alternative is, if your fare allows for advanced seat reservation, go to the seat selection (under the services menu) and check the cabin's layout. If the emergency exit is located in row 25, it's a 787-8

just out of curiosity, has anyone done a status match with LAN Pass on the basis of a LAN flight FRA-MAD or v.v.? Their status match seems to require a LAN or TAM flight in the proceeding 12 months now. Cheers

Status matches require that you have a LAN or TAM flight within the calendar year (not 12 rolling months). The flight must have been fully operated by LAN/TAM, with a revenue (not award) ticket... I believe that's pretty much it, so if you fly MAD-FRA and/or FRA-MAD you should be OK
