This might be a better option if you aren't aware of the current market price of some Korean fish. Some vendors at Norangjin will try to price up nearly 10X to foreigners, so bargain hard! Restaurants on the other hand, will have a posted price, and will be slightly above market price, but at least you wont be getting ripped off.

Shop around and compare prices.

There are also some good Korean BBQ places close to the Han river.

In Japan they do the same thing...
The only difference is that at least in Japan I can recognize the character as it's the same as the Chinese one.

The best one I know is a small restaurant run by two Korean aunties close to Namsan.

We've got a 23 hr stint in Seoul tonight and I searched out this thread but was saddened it had become dormant. With one night we'll probably hit a few places we have experience with but hopefully the thread will revive in time.

There's a very helpful website called Seoulistic http://www.seoulistic.com

They do a lot of lists about famous, old restaurants or "the most popular _____ in Seoul." Great way to narrow down your options. I tell all my friends to check it out when they come visit.

And my two cents on the best food: GOPCHANG.

Thanks for this! I'll be using their site, especially these articles as reference:

As a foodie, it seems like Jongno-gu is a good place to set up as your 'hub'. Thoughts?

Heading there next week.

Wow! I may not agree, but I do respect your choice.

I will have to go with either the marinated beef, galbi, or the korean bacon, samgyupsal.

I'm a big fan of seolleongtang and hotteok. Such great things!

One thing I'd never thought I'd try but loved was temple food.

To be fair, gopchang is my favorite indulgent food. It's made better by my favorite ajumma AND her really good wasabi mustard sauce. And "straight out of the 80s, didn't change a thing since we opened in 82" vibe.

I, honestly, like ALL Korean food except beondaegi, nakji and ojingeo. Meat and soju is the past time of past times in Korea for me.
