Long Layover: Required Documents?

If we leave the airport during a long layover and travel to Seoul (U.S. Citizens), will we need to have obtained permission prior to arriving, or can we get a visa upon entry?

Absolutely need nothing. You will get a 90 day tourist visa just by checking the box on the form. Then, you just stay a few hours.

Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

Very much looking forward to our 23 hours in Seoul!

absolutely nothing required for US citizens....

I was connecting at ICN last year. I only had less than 3 hours. Since I haven't been to ICN in a long time, I wanted to exit airside and walk around. I clear immigration and walked outside. 20 minutes later, I went back into airside. That's gotta be the shortest visit to Korea ever?

I've done shorter.
I once brought some ( duty-free) golf clubs for a supplier while in transit through Seoul.
Cleared immigration, cleared customs with the gold clubs, exited, handed the clubs
over to my supplier, and then back through immigration to catch my connection.

Easy as pie. The airport monorail takes longer than the visa stamp.

I don't believe any train at ICN is a monorail.
