Snow - Time of year again
Hey,
Was wondering, if anyone has heard that this Friday there will be a big snow fall over the Netherlands... Anyone knows how schiphol is planning to cope?
How many flights have been affected? Looking at some of the posts on the KLM Facebook wall, it seems most (if not all) short haul flights have been canceled?
Im due to fly to ORD tomorrow. Currently on hold with KLM UK. They are saying there is "nothing to worry about as your flight is in the morning"??
I'm asking them to check again...
I did ask about going to AMS this evening instead of tomorrow morning but that want an extra £1000 to change the ticket? Ive pointed the person helping me to their website...
Right - I've been re-booked onto a flight to AMS this evening (free of charge) instead of travelling out tomorrow morning. Will hopefully be able to catch the flight to ORD tomorrow as at least I'll be at Schiphol rather than having a sleepless night wondering if there will be any short haul flights from LHR first thing (when the snow looks like its arriving)
Do they usually get the long haul flights away (albeit delayed) udring snowy conditions?
I've been so looking forward to this trip - I don't want to cancel it

Yes, they do usually focus on the long hauls to the detriment of short hauls when there is a foul-up at the hub. (And what you did is certainly wise, as even if flights operate, they sometimes apparently insist on not having connecting passengers travel when AMS is clogged).
Enjoy your flights! I think we all remember your post regarding your business class trip, I hope it lives up to expectations and that you're not too put out by the potential delays.
Don't leave it too late to try and find a hotel for tonight.

Thank you Irishguy28! That's very reassuring to know
I have just managed to book the Raddisson Blu at Schiphol Rijk? I couldn't get the on-airport hotels (they also seem to be offering only day rates) I haven't used this hotel before but I shall regard it as all part of the adventure!
Well, I guess now its all in the lap of the (snow clearing) gods at the airport!
All that's left is for me to get myself to LHR this evening, change the parking and get to the lovely Neherlands. If the flight to Chicago is cancelled I may just spend the time in Amsterdam instead....
Let the adventure begin!
(forgot to say that I've been happy with KLM so far. Got a text first thing to offer re-booking due to snow. After initial confusion with re-booking conditions, it was all done smoothly and the new KL1058 is already showing in my booking - although it won't allow me to chck in online. Will have to do it at the airport I guess...)
I'm at Schiphol at the moment, and it's all pretty green! There has clearly been some snowfall at some point as there were bits of white on the grass verges as we were taxiing in, but that's about it. No sign of any cancellations or significant delays. Lots of snow in Northern Germany and East of the Ijsselmeer (just got in from HAM) but once we had crossed the Ijsselmeer everything was green.
TAF (aviation forecast) mentions some snow including some heavy showers in the early hours of tomorrow morning but it looks like it's all due to clear through by mid-morning tomorrow:

I tried to contact KLM to see if I could modify my itinerary. The very helpful lady told me that it is indeed possible, but I should do it through AZ (since the ticket was bought through their website).
Called AZ, they have no idea of what I am talking about, and said that they will call back...

The snow event is expected tomorrow, not today. For North Holland, the KNMI is warning of snow between midnight and 17:00, with accumulations of between 0 and 3 cm per hour, and a total accumulation of 5-10cm (10-20 cm locally).

called back AZ, they say that KLM's rebooking policy does not apply, i.e. I will have to go to the airport tomorrow and see then if the flight is traveling regularly or not. Finger crossed...

I would recommend the Park Plaza Amsterdam Airport if you still want to earn CC points :-). Less expensive, a lot closer to the airport and perfectly fine for a night.
The forecast for snow is for the 7th (so, tomorrow) starting at midnight and lasting about 18 hours.
The forecast I posted is valid until 1800 UTC tomorrow and doesn't look all that worrying. The heavy snow (+SN) is only a PROB30, temporary light snowfall forecast (without any PROB) for much of tomorrow, then going to NSW (no significant weather) in the afternoon.
