Carry it on. ALWAYS.
Thanks you sbm12. A question to add on to this topic, when are you not and are allowed to photograph when taking off and landing. Does the all portable electronics rule apply until thr 10000 foot level to use them and turn them off?
Just wondering as usually the best shots are between take off and 10K ft level and below the 10K ft level to landing
Just looking for some clarification on check-in for a flight out of JFK. I would hate to mess up for, this, my inaugural JetBlue flight!
On JetBlue's website under the info for JFK it states:
Quote:
We recommend you arrive at the airport at least 60 minutes prior to departure for domestic travel...
On the website under JetBlue's guide to "Cut off time for checking in":
Quote:
Cut-off Time for Checking In for Domestic Flights
Checked baggage may not be accepted less than 30 minutes prior to the flight departure time...
So...am I correct in thinking that while it's recommend for me to be there at least 60 minutes prior to departure, I could - for whatever reason - get there up to 30 minutes prior (with checked baggage) and still be OK? I honestly do not anticipate cutting it this fine but...you just never know what's gonna happen

Tecnically you need to be at the checking desk just finishing up checking in when 30 minutes hits. Because of the screening and transportation of the bag it may not make it to the plane if you check in at the 30 minute mark. Plus we start boarding the flight 30 minutes prior to departure and you still would have to navigate through security and to the gate which could cause you a lot of problems. Not to mention if you are coming from the Air Train you will need longer than 30 minutes to navigate through the walkway to the check in desks. Like you said, don't plan on 30 minutes being enough time, 60 minutes should be the bare minimum.

We always told people to be at the airport at least 90 mins prior to departure in BOS when I was in customer service. I think this should be universal across the system, maybe 2 hours for IAD (bag issues). You never know what the lines will be as well.

Just so you know, the AirTrain doesn't go through to Penn Station. You can take either one of 2 routes:
1. Take the Airtrain to Jamaica station (station D), and then transfer to an LIRR train going to Penn station. This will be $5 plus whatever the LIRR ticket costs, but is probably the fastest option - probably about a half hour or so plus waiting time at Jamaica for a train.
2. Take the Airtrain to Howard Beach station (station A), and then transfer to the A line (part of NYC subway) that will take you through brooklyn, downtown manhattan, and then to 8th ave and 34th st. (and links to Penn Station). This will be $5 + $2, and will take longer than option 1, but depending where in the city you're coming from/going to, it might be slightly faster.

If you want to take the subway in the E train from Jamaica Station is faster than the A from Howard Beach. The break-even point is somewhere south of West 4th street in terms of travel time.
On the weekend the LIRR can be had for $3 by purchasing a City Zone ticket rather than a ticket to NYP.
It should take at most 30 minutes to get from the Jamaica station to the terminal. Figure up to 15 minutes waiting for a train, about 10 for the ride to T5 and 5ish for the walk, depending on how fast you go. I timed my walk back after my tour on opening day and it was ~3 minutes, including a pause for some pictures.

Sorry...I should have clarified that while I intend to start at Penn - taking the LIRR - I do, indeed, plan on changing to the actual AirTrain at Jamaica. Sometimes the head thinks one thing and the fingers type another!
Wouldn't it be nice though if you COULD catch an non-stop airport train in the city
