I just looked up how i did it. Once I got to Kyoto station, i immediately switched to the subway to karasuma-Oike, then to the subway to Higasi-yama. (both subways are very short rides)

It's all on the trip listed on the airport site as "higashi-yama"

I probably spent less than 10 minutes in Kyoto city itself. Went immediately to the temples that way.

By the way I did make one big mistake, which is when I got off the plane from bangkok I went upstairs (which transit passengers do). It was a big pain to get back downstairs to go through customs and i also then had to wait in line. It really ticked me off because though I arrived at like 7 a.m., I didn't leave kix til 9:30 cutting down my time in kyoto.

Whatever you do, don't make my mistake.

Was just at KIX today and took the time to check this out:

The boat service from KIX to Kobe airport started on July 13 - and I think it makes the Kobe option quite a good idea for a person with a full day to spend at KIX.

www.kobe-access.co.jp

Book online for 2000yen return ferry ticket
20 departures per day
29 minute journey time (plus another say 30 mins from Kobe Airport to Sannomiya).

The boat trip is worth taking for the maritime view of the two airports alone. If there is actually time to go to Kobe proper that's a big plus.

10 Hours at KIX, Suggestions?

Will find myself at KIX next month for about 10 hours. Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations to pass the time?

Bring a LOT of readings materials and DVD. KIX is an exceedingly boring airport comparing to NRT.

10 hrs KIX

Which ten hrs will you be there? There is a hotel fairly close by that could be of use to you. http://www.booking.com/hotel/jp/gardenpalace.html#top

This is the hotel used by UA for misconnects in years past when UA flew to Saipan and Guam from KIX. It used to be the Nakamachi Garden Palace in those days and yes I misconnected and stayed there at UA's expense. It was a family run business type hotel. Reasonable rates, dining room, bar and the baths are very relaxing! Look for my picture on the wall just as you enter the bar area. Enjoy

I completely disagree with this. KIX has lots of shops, restaurants and other places to pass some time. Depending on what time of day your 10 hours fall in, you could take the train to the nearby outlet mall area but it is not really very exciting. A trip into Osaka is just possible but you would have to really watch your time to get back in time to reclear security and make your flight.

Here is the link for KIX. Note the dropdown menu for "Services" and Restaurants and Shops."

I don't know your taste, so just list up couple of suggestions.
If you'd explore outside the airport, I do suggest you buy some good guidebook beforehand.

3-hour shopping tour to Rinku-town mall by bus
5-hour tour to Kishiwada castle by train
http://www.kansai-airport.or.jp/news...age/3htour.pdf

Osaka downtown is just 45 min train ride from KIX, so you have enough time to visit virtually any corner of the city, including Osaka castle,
http://www.tourism.city.osaka.jp/en/...cas/index.html
Floating garden at Shin Umeda Sky-building,
http://www.skybldg.co.jp/garden/e/index.html
Dotonbori, Tsutenkaku tower, etc.

In the airport, you can day-use Hotel Nikko KIX with swimming pool and gym
http://www.nikkokix.com/e/top.html
or kill hours at Observation Hall, just watching runway.

Well we couldn't find anywhere to eat after checking in and going through security for the UA KIX-ORD. In that terminal (I don't remember which, but this is before taking the train to the departure gate) there was one snack shop and another restaurant that didn't have anything very appealing. We ended up grabbing some nibbles in the lounge UA uses, which is also fairly dreadful.

But hey, we really had a blast in Dotonbori, so no big deal.

If those hours are day time hours, you can take the Airport Rapid Service train from KIX to Osaka Station. Get off here and check out everything in this complex. There are restaurants, shopping malls abound. Should you be interested in window shopping for electronics stuff, you will find couple of big store around the same neighborhood. Yodabashi Camera shop is located to the side of the station. You will be amazed what you find here. Pick up a map and tourist info at the Osaka tourist office in the station and off you go. You can kill 6 hours in the city with ease.

Well there's your problem.

There are whole floors of shops and things land-side.

No, the problem is I want to check in and get past all the nastiness so I can relax before the flight.

Ugly airport. And I hear it's slowly sinking as well.

Again, loved Dotonbori.

Apart from the fact that KIX is a porkbarrel boondoggle, it certainly isn't asthetically un-pleasant. It's just that when it was built , Osaka was trying to move on from it's Takoyaki/Dotombori past........thus the blandness. I personally think a bit of leopard skin here and there would liven things up ^ !

I suggest merging this thread with the following one:

And here are two other threads which are full of helpful hints for KIX:
