Narita International Airport (NRT) - Layover & Hotel
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby
Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).
If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.
See Mike Newman's Narita Layover Pages for many things one can do.

Thanks all for the input.
I will be coming from HKG, so time-zone/jet lag is not an issue. We connect onto a flight back to Europe, so part of my plan is to burn off some energy for the kids. Flying J so will have shower access. Will miss the festival by a couple of weeks.
I think I will attempt the temple visit. Best case we get to see a tiny bit of Japan and get out of the airport for a couple of hours. Worst case, we don't like it but still manage to burn off a couple of hours of layover going to/from.

Have you considered not taking your bags with you?

OK the NRT map is pretty awful - I'm arriving a few hours early for an int'l departure from terminal 1 south. Aside from lounging, what should I do to kill time? I heard that most shopping is pre-security, confirm?

All duty free shops are post security gate side, transit passengers will have access. Convenient stores and non-duty free items stores (such as pharmacy and book stores), plus sit down restaurants are concentrated more on pre-security area.

What kind of shopping? There is extensive shopping both pre and post security albeit almost like a shopping mall with tons of restaurants pre security, not as many post - but still quite a lot.

Shopping before security includes lots of Western and Japanese-style restaurants and coffee shops, a Uniqlo shop, an electronics shop, a bookstore, a music store, a pharmacy, and several souvenir stores ranging from pure tourist kitsch to decent folk art and foods that Japanese travelers take to homesick friends and relatives overseas.
But don't take my word for it. Here's the link:

@RichardNixon
Are you arriving on another flight in the same terminal to NRT itself from outside?
I'm in T1 constantly and while there is a nice selection of retail and restaurants, there is plenty of shopping airside, obviously the duty-free kind.
@mnbp
Thanks for the link.
Absolutely. Even on rainy days, I head to the Observation Deck before I go through security. Great views of a runway and mostly the DL and UA gates, with the occasional AM at one of them.
Here is a thread with some photos I posted

Is 1:50 enough time for int'l connection?
I'm traveling from KUL to SFO by way of NRT. I have 1:50 (no checked bags).
I'll be arriving via All Nippon Airways and getting onto United (all on same ticket). They show a 1:50 window.
I'll have to clear customs, but have no checked baggage. Not sure what terminals yet.
Is 1:50 a reasonable window of time to make my connecting flight in NRT?

You will not clear customs at NRT, you will be transit passengers. Both NH (All Nippon) and UA (United) uses NRT Terminal 1 South. Upon arrival at NRT follow the sign of Transit Passengers, you will go through the security and come out to departure gate area, will not go through passport control and customs. 1:50 is enough time for transit.
Thanks for weighing in, AlwaysAisle (btw - I too always choose aisle, which is why flight selection for less than 7 days out is getting complicated).

I am not sure if this is the right thread to ask this but...
I am looking into booking a trip to Japan, top two spots to visit are Tokyo and Kyoto, so is it worth it going to NRT then leaving from KIX(or vice versa)? Prices are about the same, I'm going with AF/KL from BUD and layover with either of them is fine, plus I get to do AMS-KIX in a 787 which is something I've been wanting to do for a while.
If anyone here's ever done this before, do you recommend that or suggest roundtrip to KIX over NRT?

Yes, it makes a lot of sense to arrive at NRT then depart at KIX, or vice versa. Mainly you save money (~10-15,000 yen/person) and time (~3-5 hours) by not having to return to point of arrival.

Arriving at NRT from BKK at 8:25 am on ANA on Sunday, January 28th. Leaving at 5:05 pm on ANA for ORD. My friend is on TG from BKK to NRT and arrives at 7:35 am. She is on the same flight to ORD.
Thinking about taking a tour of Narita city with Rainbow Tours. Is this crazy to do in January?Too cold? Any other suggestions? I will have access to the ANA and United lounges but don't want to spend 7 hours in the lounge. My friend has never been to Japan so would be nice for her to see something rather than Narita airport.
We are returning from a two week trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. Anything different to see in Narita city?
Thanks!!
