Narita International Airport (NRT) - Layover & Hotel
Where to stay overnight and what to do nearby

Narita Airport (NRT) is approximately 60 km from central Tokyo. It is blessed with numerous hotels, many with shuttles (served from the terminals' bus platforms) and often at surprisingly low rates for Japan. Some of these hotels offer free shuttles into the nearby city of Narita (Narita-shi).

If you have a few hours (say six or more) Narita offers many things to do--the Narita-san Shinsho-ji Temple and Park is beautiful and pleasant and on weekends one often sees performances of traditional arts and music. The Omotesando street leading there is lined with shops and restaurants, as well as a local museum.

See Mike Newman's Narita Layover Pages for many things one can do.

See the thorough online Japan Guide.

We have previously done in a week in Tokyo, but on a later trip to Seoul, I purposely scheduled an 8.5 hour layover so we could explore Narita. Even though I was starting to come down with a cold, we had a great day there and I would highly recommend it. We more or less did the above itin, although we took a bus back to the airport instead of the train, since we ended our day at the mall and that had easy bus service to the airport.

Great! Tahank you all
We've decided to do Narita rather than wasting time going to and from Tokyo!

There will be time for Tokyo next time!

6am to 11am layover (T2) - any chance it's possible to quickly dash to Narita, and to catch blooming sakura at this time of the year?

There's enough time.
You could take the Keisei main line local train to Keisei Narita - e.g. at 6:31AM or 6;59AM. The journey time to Keisei Narita station is 7 mins.
Coming back, take the a train from Keisei Narita to T2 - e.g. Limited express at 09:03AM or 09:20AM

Hope you had a good / great time in Narita.
So may things to see and do.
With many trips through NRT I still spend hours in the village of NRT.
TOY really require days not hours.
Much delayed post - didn't send the first time.

Short layover in Narita - lounge access question

Hey guys I'll have a very short layover in Narita when I travel with my family this summer (4 hours). I'm asssuing that's not enough to do anything outside the airport.

Two questions, we will be traveling in from the US on JAL premium economy and traveling onward on JAL economy. As far as lounge access goes, I know Sakura lounges give access to departing passengers on PE, how strictly is that enforced? Since we couldn't purchase tickets going onwards from NRT on PE, would they allow us to enter the lounge with an arrival boarding pass? Has anyone done that before?

Second, even though we are not traveling onto an airline that flies out of terminal 1, is it possible to use the shuttle connection between terminal 1 and 2 to visit the KAL lounge there (priority pass)?

I wish we had an 8 hour connection so that we could visit Narita but given the shortish layover, I think we are confined to the airport.

For JAL lounge questions you can check the JAL Forum, however, my understanding is that JAL lounge access policy is based on your departing flight and Japanese is known as by the rule.

Also, they scan your boarding pass at the entrance of the lounge for access verification. Your arrival flight boarding pass or your departing economy boarding pass will give beep sound denying the entrance. Those machine will only go by the rule.

If you are talking about gate side terminal transfer bus, then you do need to show a boarding pass or ticket itinerary showing that you are departing from Terminal 1 flight. There have been reports that they did not check boarding pass nor ticket itinerary, but that tends to be rare case, do not count on that.

>> visit the KAL lounge there (priority pass)?

Not to mention the high likelihood that you will be refused entry as the lounge must give priority to their own customers (KAL premium cabin and Skyteam status passengers departing on skyteam flights), as is the case for other KAL+ Priority Pass lounges at HND/KIX/FUK/ICN .

Overnight plan for sightseeing at night from and to Narita

Guys any ideas for an overnight stay plans? I am arriving at Narita at 4 pm and my flight leaves the next day at 10 am. Decided not to book a hotel and mingle around but now read there is no public transportation at night. Going anywhere and then making it for the tuna show at 4am but what do I do with the rest of my time and how would I about transportation? Any ideas are welcome.
Also, do you I need to spray mosquito repellent for Tokyo? Thanks.

If you're in Tokyo, public transit stops around 1:00AM and resumes at around 5:00AM, so you will have no trouble getting around.

Tokyo does not have a significant mosquito problem.

For those off-hours, I would suggest going to one of the onsen (hot spring baths) mentioned in the Tokyo at Night guide. As the guide suggests, these places have a lot more than hot water available.

If you want to go to the tuna auction (which I think it is overrated and which has limited space), you'll have to take a cab. Finding one shouldn't be too hard, but they charge extra during the hours when the trains aren't running.

You'll get to Tokyo by 6pm, probably before. If it were me, I'd at least get a cheap hotel room, maybe in Ueno. Hang out for 6-7 hours. Start out with maybe a trip to Sky Tree to catch the view of Tokyo at dusk and take in shopping/dining down below. Follow it up with a visit to Roppongi or Shibuya for nightlife. Return to Ueno, maybe have late night ramen, then crash for 4-5 hours. Forget about the tuna show.

If you're not going to get a hotel, then I agree that the onsen option seems your best bet.
