Matsumoto - taxi rental for 3 hr?

A little time constraint, trying to do too much I guess.

Anyone know of a car hire service, or ability to rent a taxi for 2-3 hours?

Matsumoto to daito wasibi farm

I could rent a car for a few hours, but it'll be costly too. IDP ($20) + car rental (5200yen) + insurance + gas
http://welcome.city.matsumoto.nagano.jp/contents02+index.htm#rent-a-car

Or try to plan my way around the train (30min Matsumoto-hotaka station, 10-20min can/bicycle)

You think you can hire a private car for less?

Train plus cab would not be impossible.

I once went to Muroji, an out-of-the-way temple in Nara Prefecture, and as I got off the Kintetsu station Muroguchi, there were two cabs and a bus waiting. I had been talking to some Japanese people on the train, and we all decided to take the bus, but I was surprised that there were cabs at all.

The Japan Guide website suggests train plus cab, in fact.

4 hour Matsumoto taxi charter: 27750 yen

3:30 hours 20370

2:30 hours 17400

2 hrs 13400

To various destinations as per http://www.alpico.co.jp/taxi/course/matsumoto/

They claim to provide "foreign language driver", as per taxisite.com

it's possible to get taxi going from station to the farm, but maybe no taxi back (so 30 min walk)

I'm at the mercy of the train schedule (JR Oito line), frequency is every 45-70 minutes

(alternative would be asking the cabs at Hotaka to wait for me at the farm, and pay maybe 1 hour of their time - 10 min drive, 40 min roam around, 10 min drive back)

1-2 hour taxi rental probably isn't as costly as renting

maybe it's doable
Matusmoto - Hotaka
11:19 - 11:46
taxi to farm = 12
roam around = 1
walk back (worst case) = 1:30

train hotaka - matsumoto
1:52-2:20

Have you thought of asking the farm to call you a taxi?

This is probably the optimal solution for OP. In a similar situation, I ended up doing this (not by choice, it's just how it all worked out). I've found that summoning a taxi is much more reliable in Japan than in my home country. If the farm expects to entertain visitors, then it should be super easy to find someone to call you a cab.
