OP - It's much more expensive - but a taxi can get you there in a pinch and is a lot easier for first timer arriving at HND. You just go downstairs after customs and the line of taxis - most understand english quite well - is right at the door.

Still cheaper than a hotel in Tokyo...
Having said that, even as a seasoned Tokyo hand I would have serious doubts of catching that 20:20 train - being a first time visitor, it seems rather hopeless.

The OP mentioned cheap hotel so I'm assuming here his budget is limited.
If I was in similar situation I think I'd go to Tokyo Station, exchange my voucher and catch the 9:36 or the 9:44 PM shinkansen to Sendai (the latter taking longer / making more stops).
Business hotels around the station will be fraction of the cost of those in Tokyo and just an hour away from Morioka so he can continue his journey in the morning.
My $.02 anyway...

I don't think it's too ambitious, even for a first timer. As a seasoned faller from trees, I would aim to catch the 8:16pm Komachi to Morioka.
Should the OP not make it in time for the train to Morioka, I think the advice to get to Sendai that night is good.

Yes it will be about 30 min door to door - while even with a seasoned traveler the best I think we could do on train is probably 25 minutes if you hit every connection perfectly and knew exactly how to transfer....

thanks guy!
after all your comments and recommendations decide to book a hotel that night. Business trip, but we still have to keep an eye on our economy , so no "Four Season Hotel"! Anyway, that doesn't mean I can't treat myself to a couple of glasses of "Suntory" Peace!
