The Tokyu hotel chain seems to divide things by smoking and non-smoking floors, and I've never had a problem with the smell of cigarette smoke in hallways or my room when renting a non-smoking room. In fact, I can't remember ever having a smoke smell problem in any hotel in Japan that had non-smoking rooms. But if you get a smoking room either because that's all the hotel has or that's all that's left, watch out!

It's news to me that non-smoking hotels exist in Japan. Good information.
