Today the government weighed in on the Hankyu Hotels menu falsifications, with the cabinet secretary saying, "From the point of view of the customer, this is an extremely grave issue." Regarding the legal issues, he said "The Consumer Affairs Agency is conducting an investigation to determine whether there has been violations of the Law for Preventing Unjustifiable Extra or Unexpected Benefit and Misleading Representation (景品表示法) Based on the results, we will consider appropriate action."

I suspect we'll see some resignations by tomorrow...

And indeed, at a press conference late tonight, Hiroshi Desaki, the president of Hankyu Hanshin Hotels, announced that he will tender his resignation at the end of the week. He will also relinquish his position as a director of Hankyu Hanshin Holdings, Inc.

We shall see if Mr. Montal will be able to hold onto his job (or, most likely, be transferred to a position at a Ritz-Carlton in a less fussy country)

since Ritz is only contracted to manage the property, Im sure the Montal guy will get a quiet transfer to some other property in the Marriott system.

Listening to his English there's not a trace of doubt that he's Spanish.
His name is typical of Catalonia.

Hyatt Regency Tokyo now admits mislabeling shrimp used in its Chinese restaurant, substituting a cheaper type than the one listed since at least August 2008.

Comment from the hotel: "In Chinese cooking, shrimp are labelled by their size, and larger shrimp are all called "Shiba Shrimp" even if their official name is not "Shiba Shrimp". For this reason, it was believed that this label was in the realm of use that could be forgiven. We apologize greatly for our lack of understanding.

The scandal has now spread to department stores. The top story on NHK tonight is Takashimaya announcing that there were six braches where false labelling was used in their stores and in-house tenants, including the flagship Nihonbashi store.

In addition to the usual shrimp related falsifications, beef with extra fat artificially injected was no labelled as such, and Alaskan Crab was substituted for Tottori crab.

The URL for the details is unintentionally quite funny.

Today it was Mitsukoshi and Isetan.

Even the Chinese joint near work had the type of shrimp whited out on the menu.

At this point, it would be news to learn of a place that did not "mislabel" its food.

Dr.Obokata, who claimed that she invented a method to make STAP(Stimulus Triggered Acquisition of Pluripotency) cells, had a press conference at Shin Hankyu Hotel in Osaka yesterday.

If it was to defend herself, there may have been other choices of the place.

It's obvious that she really created SMAP cells, giving how well she dances around the truth...

Saw the whole thing... well, I kind of tuned out when her attorney took over. You've got to feel bad for her. This must've taken years off her life. She looked like she was on the verge of meltdown the whole time she was speaking. I'd say, give her a break.

Brutal? Yeah. I hear it is.
