At least on Ishigaki the connection was ok in the city center.
Naha not an issue, Miyakojima looks OK but none on Iriomote:

Please note Global Advanced used E-Mobile which is now rebranded Yahoo Mobile (Softbank sold E-Mobile/E-Access to Yahoo Japan (which itself is owned by Softbank Partly also)

See here for Okinawa coverage (zoom out to see other islands)

Suggest look at Softbank Rental: http://www.softbank-rental.jp/e/rental-plan-ib05.php

Thanks a lot, especially for that map! ^ I could only find one coverage map on ymobilejapan page that really gave no info about the coverage. Naha looks like as I assumed and coverage on Miyakojima looks good enough too. Connection on Iriomote is the least important of our destinations, so we can live with that. I see that Softbank's coverage is much better, but the price is going to be for 15 day rental 7950 yen vs. 24 165 yen. So me thinks it is GAC again for us!

Any recommendations for a data-only SIM for an internationally-unlocked Sprint iPhone 6 (apparently this is the model DoCoMo/AU/SoftBank all use)? Looking to turn it into a hotspot as well.

Please read the other prepaid sim thread for related information.

I am planning my next Japan trip and I thought I might resurrect this thread (why isn't this one stickied / wiki-fied?!).

I have been using Ninja WiFi (http://ninjawifi.com/en/plan/) for my last couple of trips and with a regular discount of 10%, it's another option. It uses SoftBank network so it's a good choice for the major cities (although I should do some actual tests instead of my minimal experience).

wifi for free

Ninja seems to be a good choice. This time I went to Japan, I rented
iVideo wifi, precisely I used it for free. They have an activity that if
you wrote a trip story, then you can get the wifi for free and I have
post on the blogspot. I asked the customer service center that what if I
post in flyertalk, they said okay. Next time I might write on flyertalk
for another free wifi:P If you are interested, here is the link: http://goo.gl/tJ8yO8

Arriving on Friday with some friends for a week in Tokyo. One of them rented a international mifi from Tep but it looks like they screwed up shipping and he may not receive it in time.

It's too late to place an order with any of the providers who ship to Narita. Other than SoftBank's counter at Narita, are the other options to consider for a week-long wifi rental in Tokyo? Either picking up in Narita or in Tokyo.

I've been searching but it's tough to find one that isn't shipping the device.

Telecom Square has an office at Narita
http://biz.telecomsquare.co.jp/ana/

Narita Airport also lists their cellular pickup stores
http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/guid...st/svc_19.html

Sim vending machines have been popping up in more and more places, both at the airport and in typical tourist areas.

Haneda also has spots for pick up if you don't need a mifi from Narita to your hotel. Also keep in mind that takkyu-bin package delivery in Tokyo is pretty much next day, so fairly quick compared to some non-Japanaese countries mail delivery time.

freecia had good suggestions: http://www.globaladvancedcomm.com/pocketwifi.html - will normally get one to you by next morning if you order online - Though just ask at your hotel, many will rent you one per day.

I'm going to post a review of SkyRoam later next week - just got the unit and will be in Japan for 3 days - THAT you can order from Amazon and pay per day $10 aprox (capped at 350MB per day but will run beyond that at .5MB/sec until next day)

Is there a Pupuru coverage map? Seems it is highly reviewed and a fair price for 8 days on their unlimited setup. In Tokyo and Kyoto and in between I'm sure it is great. Renting motorcycles and might be off the beaten path a little more.

One review I read in those cities and even around Mt Fuji had 99% coverage on 4G but if someone has a map or better review that would be great.

I believe this is the coverage map, although it's all in Japanese.

Recently used Global Advanced Communications to rent a pocket WiFi for 10 days for my trip in Japan. (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hakone / Yokahama).

We picked the Standard WIFI package and it was excellent. Managed to get a secure and reliable connection throughout the trip in all the areas mentioned above. Battery lasted about 8 hrs for 2 Android devices on a medium usage level... We cleared almost 5GB alone in surfing only (No videos or YouTube).

We did however have a few minor drops in connection here and there but I assume that was normal or due to our own personal cell phones.

I would use them again in the future!

Japan Experience?

I noticed that this organization, Japan Experience, that sells the JR Pass also has a pocket WiiFi on their website at a better price than Pupuru. The device and downloads look identical to the one Pupuru has on their website. Has anyone used them for their Wifi device and how was it?

Pupuru was awesome to deal with. Easy to pick-up. East to return. It was quick and reliable from Tokyo to Osaka to Kyoto and even on Mt. Fuji.

Highly recommended!

Well this thread is just beaming with referrals for GAC, they should say "Recommend by FlyerTalk.com Travellers" in their website

I just reserved a 75Mbps Wifi + Battery for July

The airport pick up at Haneda is confusing since there is a charge to deliver it to the Airport but its actually free to deliver it to your Hotel.
The choice then is obvious, have it waiting for you at the hotel for freeee

Compared to the others GAC does not offer insurance. Has anyone needed the insurance?
