Dumb question: Upgrading JAL metal booked via AA Codeshare

Hi folks,

Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question or if it should be in the AA section.

My girlfriend and I have a mileage run / mini vacation from JFK-NRT-CKG in early 2016 on Japan Airlines metal marketed by AA (all AA flight numbers).

I recently noticed that JAL airlines allows a Y -> C upgrade for 30k miles. I currently do not have any JAL miles but could quickly get some through SPG's 1:1 transfer with JAL.

Since this is a flight on JAL metal (even though I purchased through AA) will I be able to upgrade the tickets using JAL miles? I just want to make sure this is doable before I start transferring them from SPG to JAL mileage bank.

Thanks for the help!

Which Y to C upgrade you were referring to?

You will need JL coded ticket to upgrade.
