JAL fly on points

I am considering of applying for the JAL program, but not sure about some of the aspects:

1) For those Fly on points, are they being reset to zero at the end of each march 31?
2) If I do get upgrade to a higher status, e.g JAL crystal, then how long do I get to keep the status for? Or is it valid for life?
3)How many fly on points do I need in order to keep that status?

It would be gratful if some can answer all these

thanks!

1. It got reset at the end of the calendar year, i.e. Dec 31
2. You can keep the status until March 31 of the second year following membership qualification, i.e. if you qualify now, you can keep your status until March 31, 2010. The only way to have a "semi" lifetime elite status is to qualify for JAL Global Club. You can find more info here. http://www.ar.jal.com/world/en/jalmile/jgc/

Thanks! Now I am more clearer about whether to apply for it

So I still need 30000 fly on points to retain my status?

yes 30K for crystal. I would suggest try to get 50K and join JGC. I remember reading something like you can retain your JGC status if you take min of 4 JAL Group flight in a calendar year but I couldn't find the page just now. They might have changed it again...You know there are so many changes coming in the next year I wouldn't be surprised if they change the JGC qualification again.

A JGC member can retain oneworld saphire if s/he attains 20,000 FOP and flies at least four JL group flights that earn JMC miles, while a JGC member is given oneworld ruby even if s/he flies less than 20,000 FOP but the minimum four flight requirement must be fulfilled, according to JAL's Japan website.

BTW,

JGC crystal (30,000 FOP) = oneworld saphire.
JGC premier (80,000 FOP) = oneworld emerald.

Aren't these one of the least demanding thresholds for oneworld saphire/emerald among all the alliance members' programs? Of course, one has to take into account JL does not give you 100% FOP for low-priced fares.

I just hit 50K for the 2008 back in the beginning of december and should get my Sapphire card and JGC application this month. So I'll let you know that whole thing with JGC pans out.

They make it out to be worthwhile to hit 50K and then just hit 20K and 4 JAL metal flights each year to have JGC Crystal (which is a OneWorld Sapphire).
It's kinda confusing, but the end deal is you'll have permanent Sapphire status for a measly 20K mile and 4 JAL flights a year after you hit 50K that first year. The best part if you're an American, you can fly all around America on AA, rack up Fly-On points and get to use the lounge which their own people can't use for free unless they're EXPlatinum

Actually, only OW Emeralds (AA EXP) get to use the Flagship Lounge on an "international" itinerary, whereas the Admiral's Club is for paid members and OW Sapphires (AA Platinum) on those international itineraries. Fortunately, I am almost always on international segments but the difference between the clubs is quite substantial.

But why does it say here that the membership is only valid for one year for JGC?

So the FOP is still the same if I want to retain the JGC crystal or sapphire status as to the normal crystal and sapphire status?

btw, turns out to be JGC is not free, they will deduct 5000 miles off the account if you do not pass their minimum requirement of 25000 FOP.

Wait, I know I can't use the flagships, and I'm cool with that. But I was under the impression from the OW board here and AA's own site that OW Sapphires could use the AC Lounge on any itin. Only their own people could only use it on international segments.

Membership validity is until the end of March following 2 years after member achieves JGC qualifications. From then on, validity is subject to annual renewal.

Yes, it's not free if you don't hold one of the qualifying JALCards and don't meet the min requirement. But they give you 3000 bonus miles for your first flight. So you only end up only paying 2000 miles. IMO I think it worths the fee since this will let you keep your elite status, especially if you think you can't meet the min 25000 FOP requirements.

yea, it seems worth it to just have 2000 deducted.

Also, can I earn FLY on points on non-JAL group airlines? Like the OW ones?

Yes, if the flights are operated by OW carriers.

Yep, sure can, any OneWorld carrier. Just be sure and hold on to all your documentation and boarding passes just in case you have to send them in to JAL to claim the miles. I recently had to do that on my last AA trip. Glad I did, that was what put me over the top maintain my JAL Sapphire status. Unfortunately, I wont re-qualify this year so thank goodness for JGC.

Could someone provide the link for the earning ratio for Fly On Points on OW carriers please?
I tried to find it on JAL website but I'm not having much luck.
