OT: Boeing 787 Dreamliner reported on fire at Logan International Airport

A fire has been reported in an empty Boeing 787 Dreamliner parked at Logan International Airport, a Massport spokesman said this morning.

Boston firefighters are assisting the Massport Fire Department as they both battle a fire on a plane at Logan International Airport this morning.

Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said Massport is in charge of the firefighting effort and the city has sent an engine and ladder truck to provide assistance.

He said the Boston firefighters on the scene reported the fire was in the belly of the aircraft.

Massport spokesman Richard Walsh confirmed that the affected aircraft was a Japan Airlines 787. The Japan Airlines flight is a direct flight to Tokyo, and the 13-hour nonstop flight has been a pivotal part of Governor Deval Patrick’s efforts to expand trade between Massachusetts and Asia.

An FAA spokesman said the fire occurred while the plane was sitting at Gate E8. State Police said there were no crew and no passengers

Well this is not good. Wonder if I should cancel my AA Award on the 787 while I'm still in the 24-hour window.

An FT spokesmod confirmed this was not a BA frame and advised posters to continue to follow this story in the JAL forum.

Is there a previous thread or discussion on how these planes were manufactured. I remember reading some controversy about how parts of the 787 production were outsourced to different non-union vendors and that was part of the reason for the delay in getting it off the ground. Is the 787 the first Boeing plane to be built this way and could it be a reason for these problems?

I think it is pretty standard for parts to be subcontracted to lots of different vendors. Probably the same for any other plane.

The A380 had numerous high profile technical issues in the last few years as well.

It shouldn't unless the 787 fleet is grounded

This is correct. Nobody hurt since Crew and passengers were offloaded
already. This was a NEW plane just delivered within the last two
weeks as per the news report.
