Flying from ORD to Spain this fall

Hi, I have flown to Europe a number of times but only on AA or NW. DH and I are taking a cruise out of Barcelona and plan to also visit Madrid, so will do an open jaw. We are flying out of Chicago and will have to change at least once for Barcelona. Oh, we fly coach. Got a great deal on the cruise but now air is eating up savings.

Dates are flexible but first choice would be to leave around 10/25/09 and return 11/09. ( Cruise is 11/1-11/08)

A lot of airlines to choose from but all seem expensive, $800 plus.
How about Iberia, nonstop going and change in Madrid coming back. . . and maybe not full mileage credit on AA?

Would be willing to go through some other major city in EU (and even take a low cost airline from there) but no one seems to have deals right now.

Most of our miles are on AA and NW (now Delta). We could fly on Iberia for 40,000 AA miles each but would prefer to save miles. Maybe take a business class some day.

Any advice would be appreciated.
