Getting from MXP to Rome

European vacation plans changed. Flying into MXP. Need to get to Rome that night. Airfares (from what i've found) are horrible. Arrive on May 15th. If taking a train, can we get on a train at MXP for Rome? Staying at the Westin Excelsior there. Or if anyone has suggestions on airfare to Rome, that would be ideal. All responses are greatly appreciated.

Train to Rome is somewhat tedious with an MXP to Milan Cadorno station. Trains from Milan to Rome leave from Centrale, requiring a metro connection.

For flights, try blu-express.com. We had a phenomenal deal in November, but ended up not needing the tickets.

The Excelsior is a lovely hotel. Enjoy your trip!

At this thread is not DL-specific, I am going to move this over to the Europe Forum.(Western-Eastern).
Many folks who are informed and enthusiastic about Italy offer good advice.

I dont know if you have stumbled across http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html yet, but it is the website for the Italian passenger railroad, TrenItalia. A quick glance of the schedules dont look like they may be best for you, but I would suggest looking and playing around with timetables and see if there is something that might work.

I've never driven in Italy, nor have I traveled direct from Milan to Rome on the highway. Maybe some others can take the topic of renting a car?

If on a reward ticket it is no problem at all for as you know they are both part of SkyTeam and you can go on AZ from MXP to Rome, for only the cost of taxes and fees. AZ award availability intra-Italy is quite good, by the way.

Also, I realize it is probably a pain to go from MXP to Milan Bergamo or Milan Linate airport, but I am just providing this to you as an option as I also do not know your flight arrival times.

Air One is an affiliate of LH and a member of the Star Alliance, I think. Also, you would come into Rome's other and less used airport, Ciampo, if you use Ryanair.

Finally, there is another LCC --blu-express.com -- that does fly from MXP to FCO, but it only has once a day service that leaves at 7:30 AM and I thought that would be too early for you.

don't forget that luggage limits on the separate ticket local is much less than on the transatlantic.

and luggage limits on LCC's, like Ryanair, are especially strict- you can pay more for your bag then you do for your ticket.

Is the initial flight into MXP booked already? What airline and fare class?
On AZ it generally costs the same or less to book an itinerary with a connection through MXP to another Italian city as to book direct to MXP.

Also, AZ is doing domestic fare sales to compete with LCC pricing; check their web site.

There's a bus that goes from MXP-Central station every 1/2 hour. From there you can catch the EuroStar (i.e. bullet) train to Rome.

The Alitalia fares listed above look excellent and would be the easier alternative though. However, I wouldn't go w/Ryan Air - not only b/c of the already noted luggage issue but also b/c you find yourself in the position of having to get from MXP to Bergamo - which is a really pain.

you might also look on this site:

http://www.alitalia.com/it_it/service/tar_euro.htm

the italian specials usually bear no relationship to the usa site.

one can purchase tickets at amex travel offices and pick them up, or purchase the ticket through the amex office, and pick the ticket up at the airport.
