Right, both funny and sad.

"Rome airports, in strict collaboration with ENAC (airport operator), said today that the roman airport system operated about 1,000 flights. In total the system has welcomed 116,000 passengers, a 1.9% increase compared to the same day last year."

Travel increased. Now when there's a sudden strike, that's when things can be bad.

Shades of La Fenice

Why am I not too surprised? Arson suspected.
http://www.ilfattoquotidiano.it/2015...ccato/1686675/

Incendio Fiumicino, 5 indagati.

Fiumicino fire, 5 under investigation.
All are workers of the company hired to maintain air conditioning at the airport. The hypothesis is that this was arson. Their involvement was captured on the closed circuit system with which one can see the workers in the room where the fire developed.

The involvement of the workers in the investigation is tied to closed circuit films of them working in the room where the blaze developed. In the days before the fire the five were supposed to activate a portable air conditioner to fix the problem of an electrical circuit board that kept overheating with the current system. The portable air conditioner turned off because it wasn't properly connected to the outside (grounded).

More trouble?

Shortly after the fire the workers in T3 threatened to strike because they felt the air was toxic. Multiple federal agencies assured them that the air was safe, and T3 was opened a week and a half after the fire to allow use of the D gates. Yesterday the government seized the D gates area due to carcinogens and other poisons in the air.

In the News Corriere Della Sera today: http://roma.corriere.it/notizie/cron...ef644b3b.shtml

Fire in Rome, prosecutors seize the D gates area.

The decision occurred after Arpa, the regional agency in charge of the environment, found the presence of dioxin and other toxic substances in the air.

The prosecutor of Civitavecchia ordered the seizure of the D gates area of Terminal 3 of FCO late afternoon on Tuesday May 26. After the May 7th fire that struck the airport the D gates were closed, then reopened on May 18th. The way to reopening occurred with the statement, "We found that there is no risk to the health of workers or passengers," by ENAC, the civil aviation agency in charge of the airport, which issued a joint statement in conjunction with all other agencies that have to do with the Rome airport. But what actually transpired was that the agency in charge of the environment had discovered the presence of dioxin at a level 10 times higher than the legal limit.

The decision of the prosecutor was made after Arpa, the environmental agency detected toxic and carcinogenic substances in the air and said, "There is a potential risk to the health of those who frequent Terminal C." As of today, the situation is still not clear. The workers union, right after the fire, denounced the situation as risky to passengers and workers. The responsible agency L'Asi Roma D put the matter into the hands of Arpa, the Higher Institute of Health to decide what measures to take. ENAC, the civil aviation authority that governs the airport, also asked Arpa for an opinion. Out of this uncertainty came the decision to seize the D gates.

The seizure of the D gate area, if confirmed, has a risk of heavily influencing the operations of the airport during the Spring and early summer high season. It was leaked that the society that manages the airport is trying to put together an emergency plan to limit the disruption and inconvenience to passengers during that time.

FCO operations

For those flying to FCO soon, due to concerns about air safety, FCO management just asked to civil aviation authorities to reduce operations down to 60%.

In the news today in Rome.

Troppa incertezza sulle analisi. Adr: Ridurre l’operativit al 60%

Too much uncertainty in the results of the analysis of the air. Airport management: "Reduce operations to 60%."

ROME - After the blaze that destroyed the terminal 3 and the dioxin scare launched by ARPA the environmental protection agency, there is still too much uncertainty about the air quality, which should be provided by the Higher Institute of Health. For this ADR (Aeroporto Di Roma) asked for a further reduction of operations. They said in a statement, "as a result of serious concerns by employees regarding the healthiness of the workplace, and by the absence of communication by relevant authorities with the competency to provide an analysis about the status of the airport affected by fire May 7, asked ENAC (Civil Aviation Authority) for a reduction in operations of Leonardo da Vinci to the 60% level."

As of 4:30 PM Rome time the authorities refused the request to go to 60%, saying there is no increased risk, and FCO is continuing to operate at 80%.

All you can do in Italy is go with the flow. Except for certain holidays, you don't need to buy a train ticket in advance, so I've never done so. I buy a ticket at the station, this way, I go when I get there.

It may be cheaper to buy in advance. Although we're talking two days out now, so Base might be the only available fare.

It's just risky to book a non-changeable train ticket for right after a flight, in case the flight is late.

If we're talking today for 2 June, the only fare class available is Base, which can be changed online prior to departure, or once in person up to an hour after departure. If you're worried about having a seat AND your flight has wifi, just book the ticket and change it from the plane if the flight is going to be late.

Masks now Required

More confusion, and an interesting compromise at FCO. Rome airport management wanted to reduce flights to 60% of normal from the 80% where they are now, because the environmental protection agency hasn't definitively ruled whether or not it is safe in T3.

The environmental protection agency now said that they cannot make a ruling because the air samples were provided by airport officials without any verification, and who had a self-interest in keeping the airport open. Even then, the dioxin and PCB levels were 10-40 times normal.

http://roma.corriere.it/notizie/cron...d1b63bb7.shtml

They could not make a ruling about whether the area is safe or unsafe in terms of carcinogens because they have doubts about how the air samples were obtained, but they issued a ruling on particulate matter and found it to be at unsafe levels for workers. They issued a mandatory ruling that all workers must wear a mask at all times, and they cannot work for longer than a 4 hour shift per day. But they said it is safe for travelers.

http://roma.corriere.it/notizie/cron...b670a5d4.shtml

But most important perhaps for travelers, the edict also said that because being in T3 is bad for your health they are taking the following measures.

"Measures for travelers.
Today's announcement of precautionary measures for passengers is to reduce the time it will take them to pass through T3 and to reduce the time they will have to stay there by requesting an increase in the number of check-in counters, and that they be opened at least one hour before the actual time, and that they increase in the number of airport personnel assigned to T3 to accomplish this. These measures will allow the speeding up of movement of passengers of T3 from the check-in area to their departure gates. They are also pursuing changing the air filters in T3 more frequently."

"Actual time" meaning the opening hours in current use: if check-in currently opens 2 hours before departure, it will become 3 hours.

We fly out of FCO on May 28th. Our flight was scheduled to leave from Terminal 3 and I confirmed the flight that morning. After having the town car drop us off at T3, we were informed that we were flying out of T5. We had to catch the shuttle bus, as did all the other people on the shuttle. T3 smelled of smoke and all of the workers were wearing face masks.

If you are scheduled to fly out of T3, make sure to give yourself a lot of extra time to change terminals.
