T A > 1
T AA > 2
T B & C > 3
T 5* > T 5*
So, B and C will become a single Terminal - Terminal 3 - while today A and B are somehow a single area, as intra-schengen area.
Terminal 1, formerly A, will be used by AZ and for some skyteam operations.
There no T 4, because the future T 4 is a new project.
The boarding areas are now numbered B, C, E, H, G. the missing letters are supposed to be used for the forthcoming gate areas, which are under development.
There was no naming for the gate areas before this change to the Terminal numbers, although the current G was the so-called 'satellite of Terminal C'.
You can see a map here http://www.adr.it/portal/portal/adr/...onAllowed=true
T5* is only a check-in & security screen area for flights operated by US airlines and El Al. After check in, travellers get T3 - usually the Gate area "G"

That was my impression too.
Perhaps they're figuring out a new layout/use for 2.
Generally speaking, it seems that this renumbering reflects the next-generation FCO, so I think they're paving the way for both new facilities (retaining this numbering), and new use of current facilities.

With this layout made of 'fingers', perhaps they want to lead people quickly to the right area.
Honestly, I find it redundant, but there were pax complaining because it was hard to get C from B...
Not sure it this segmentation is also needed to manage the extra/intra schengen travellers & transits.
Till now A+B were Schengen, C extra-schengen. For the time being, 1 to AZ&Skyteam and 3 to all others. So, each terminal will have both intra and extra-schengen travellers & transits and ADR will need to manage both within a single terminal, in dedicated areas

I recently 'tested' this change.
I found the mapping pretty easy, with the right information at the right place.
I was a little bit concerned by the gate area numbering system (or even better, by the change management), but it's really easy and ADR managed this operation pretty well.
The new signs provide the time to destination, which is pretty good to make travellers connecting at FCO less concerned by the connection times.
I will post more later on the details of what happened, but be aware that many of the people who work there are NOT familiar with where things are.
I flew home on Friday (11/06), not only did they lose some of our luggage, they give us misinformation about where the international terminal is. The porters were more interested in chatting on their cell phones then actually helping people. They also did not infrom us there was a "meeting" of the baggage handlers from 9:00 a.m. till noon on Friday ( we happened to see a sign), the airline also lied to us about a number of other things.
As a result, my friend missed our flight and had to pay her way home. Some of our luggage is still in Rome. It was the most stressful time I have had at an airport in sometime.
