I have been a PC plat member since 2007. I earned about 500,000 points last year and got the 'you are in the top 1%' letter.
However, I have found I don't often get executive rooms (or any apparent upgrade really)... Should I be?
I usually stay in Holiday Inns or occasionally Crowne Plaza... Seriously thinking about changing to a different program, as I feel I am getting nothing. Last week was in the HI Budapest, room was rubbish, this week I am in the HI Dusseldorf... the hotel/ room is nice, but the only places I have had upgrades are the HI Madrid (near the Bernebau) and the Crowne Plaza Brussels.
As you've discovered platinum status benefits can vary considerably between properties.
Do you usually ask for an upgrade when you check-in or just take what you're given?
I take what I am given... why should I have to ask? They can see my Plat card.
The kettle's broken and no one has bothered to come replace it Might go downstairs with my plat card and ask for a(n upgraded room) with a kettle that works

What you have to realize, is that alot of people requalify for Platinum in a few stays. I will have stayed 8 nights by the end of January, and will make platinum. Last year I made gold in one stay (5 nights). ITs the RA's that get it good.

Is it worth getting Amb/ RA status if you stay mainly in HIs?
How did you get Plat in 8 nights? I have stayed 8 in Jan, and will not be close?!
Edit: Just went to ask about my room/ kettle, and apparently I am already in a club room (Read: upgraded I get a marginally bigger room, some fruit, and a kettle) woo- bloody- hoo!

Hi sambessey,
Welcome to FT. I would suggest you have a lot through a few of the pages of this forum, you will find a few debates on the subject of Plat and PC.
As for your kettle, well if you dont mind these problems then its upto you but I would not be standing for it.

sambessey,
May I suggest you read the Master Promo Thread for 2009. It will give you various ideas of what to register for which may gain you some additional points, but since you average about 5500k per night last year you would have made Plat within your first 8 stays.

Wow, I am really surprised about your 5500 points earning per night last year. This means, you booked on every stay a very expensive room category. But then you don't get an upgrade, because you must have booked already at the HI an executive room to get this ratio.
Maybe it is more nights then... I based this on what I could see (Last 6 months, which was about 40 nights). I usually get a standard room. but I also get every single points promo out there.
Well, if it's 80-90 nights/year, you might want to:
Try to stay at 3 different IC within the calendar year to achieve RA
or
Switch between Hilton HHonors and PC. By utilizing the sticky promo thread, it shouldn't take you more than 20-25 nights to achieve PC plat. By switching the remaining nights to HH, you should be able to earn at least HH gold if not diamond.
