Update 2023:
- it seems no new RA have been invited by IHG
- criteria for RA requalification are still unknown
- geographical location of member / country account registration seems of some impact due of covid19(restrictions/availability)
- RA is processed in weekly batches starting december 2022
- proof by nicolas75 shows RA qualification for 2024 seems to be strictly based on IC hotels only (not Regent, Kimpton, SixSenses anymore)

As per Tim O'Brien's post about IHG-corporate explaining RA criteria:

As you are aware,
Royal Ambassador is our invitation only tier with the number of members invited each year
limited to ensure our hotels are able to consistently deliver on the benefits promise,
elevating your stay experience at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts.

Although we do not currently have a published criteria for Royal Ambassador,
consideration is determined by variable activities within a members account such as
- qualified paid room nights & spend across our luxury brands (, 2023 EDIT: Post-Pandemic from 2024 InterContinental only : Pre-Pandemic also Kimpton & Regent ) ,
- member region,
- primary hotels,
- category (of the hotel class / €$¥£ price levels compared to currency rates / competition / city / region / country / continent )
- tenure (repeat custom / average spend at hotel)
Accompanying or adjoining reservations,
such as the additional rooms of your family etc are not included for Royal Ambassador consideration
but are included in determining Spire Elite status within IHG Rewards Club
.

* FT:IHG forum community group consensus / empirical evidence shows
- that members must have stayed at different unique hotels per city / country / region / continent
the amount of uniques needed for RA qualification is unknown but generally extended long stays at just 1 hotel do not qualify
- IHG-corporate showing keen interest in how much guests are spending €$¥£ at hotel's own operated F&B / Spa / transport / extra services / other venues
atacama40 has given us insights that extra spend at the hotel charged to the hotelfolio generates EQP but also flags the database as high valued spending guest
- one must have AMB to get considered for RA invitation by IHG as they seem to evaluate over a longer period the length of one's tenure / devotion / spend / undisclosed criteria at stayed IC-hotels

Update 2020 / 2021:
RA status was extended due to the global pandemic of covid19

================================================== =======

Update 2019: The RA status granted at the start of the calendar year 2017 and 2018 has been based on IC revenue. As from 2019 criteria again have become vague. RA is not achieved through IC spend only. Other, unknown elements are taken into account as well. (Fact: Some users with very high +25k IC spend were not renewed in 2019.)

Update December 2018: it looks like some accounts are proactively being renewed in December 2018, well ahead of the stated expiration of Jan 31, 2019. It is currently unknown what criteria were used, but previous years appeared to indicate around $10K++ in IC spend only.

As before, please Divide EQPs by 10 to get $$$ Spend

[Archived - no longer valid] New (Royal) Ambassador Criteria

A document was unintentionally available in the internet about changes to the (Royal) Ambassador Qualifying and Re-Qualifying criteria.
The document is available on

http://viewfromthewing.img.boardinga...Ambassador.pdf

Older discussion
There was an ongoing discussion about the criteria for some time. This thread is now closed.

update from Executive Liaison Sept, 2023,
spend at other IHG luxury brands does count for RA, and Renewal.
Brands weren't stated, but reasonable to assume Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton.

i don't disagree, if they only offered free mini bar, exceptional upgrades, weighty point earning etc...^

did you intentionally leave Grand Hyatt out?

how about Four Seasons, Sofitel, Shangri-La....

IHG Management based on historical comms are just about stupid enough to do that

Reminds me of the good old days when I rang up IHG Amb Line, to check I had enough IC.IHG nights to requal as an RA, only to be told

"You have enough IC nights stayed, but you must stay 8x more IHG non-IC brand nights to re-qualify "

As if most RA's would choose CP/HI over an IC if in an IC city, in my case above obviously any 8x IC/IHG paid qual nights would have sufficed.

Anyone have a sense for what the IC spend threshold will be for RA qualifying? Or are we just going to have to wait and see from our data points at the end of this year?

I'm going to have about 34 IC nights, mostly in expensive markets like San Francisco, Doha, and Singapore, just a few in Miami and New Orleans. I'm guessing my IC spend will be around $6000. Wondering if I am even in the ballpark. Might affect what I decide to do for the rest of the year.

pure guess work, but i would assume $6k is too low and should be looking at $10k.

im surprised it's as low as $6k with nights in SF? Or have I just been unlucky when SF has cost me $300+ / night?

It is Intercontiental Brand only before-tax rates (vat, local taxes) earned $$$'s that we are being told count (ie IC posted as EQP equivalents). I'd look to spend $10,000++ at IC hotels to keep/earn RA status.

Whilst probably worthwhile chasing $10k if at $9k plus with a few manufactured non-needed IC nights, at your mentioned $6k one is so far off, it is not worth chasing, unless by late December you'd expect to be in us$9k ballpark.

I personally don't see us$6000 (30 x $200++ IC nights) being enough, or even that close. Some of us given/renewed RA status on 3rd Jan 2017 for period Jan7 - Dec17 listed our counts in this threads wiki, and us$10,000 seemed needed by us all.

nb
Because the switch was kind of mid year 2016 (as July2016 RAs were getting extended to just Dec2016) when IHG reviewed Jan-Dec2016 RA spend, some much reduced allowance was given to non-IC IHG hotel spend, so a few renewed RAs who failed on IC 10k count qualified when IHG counted some %age of other IHG spend. However we are informed thast in 2017 that will not happen.
eg
TravelTheWorld66 147/33/11 EQP=27.972 ($8500 IC Spend)

Thanks, guys. Yeah, SF and S'pore nights (which I have the most of), are probably running a lot closer to $300/night, and so was Doha. But there's maybe 20 of those and another 10 in lower-rate markets. So maybe my spend will be closer to $7500. Sounds like too far off to make a run for it.

My problem with making RA is that in two places where I spend a lot of time, I'm not staying at the IC's. And a week-long conference I go to this year is being hosted at a Hilton.

Just wondered who informed whom.

(I did try the search tool!) Does anyone know that since RA is now based on revenue, if the EQP for overlapping stays (such as more than one room booked under my account for co workers, family members, etc) count towards RA renewal?

Only one room per guest counts, except i believe, USA if '2 or More rooms' on one folio at same hotel on a night then can get points for 2x rooms. You can also score for f+b if all rooms charged to your room.

So if you got IC EQPs from multiple rooms on a stay at IC then they should count for RA requal come Dec2017. The fact they are IC EQPs is probably all that IHGs I.T. tracks, even if IC hotel incorrectly awards EQPs for more than 2x rooms per night.

If other worker pays by supplying a CC at checkin/checkout, not you, then you should not get the points for the co-worker room that night, but hotels make mistakes, if coworkers IC room rate posts to you as IC EQPs that is good enough.

One way round the EQPs for one room only limit at some hotels is book a two bedroom suite.

got it. The stays are posting on my account as overlapping stays but the EQP's are posting to my account so I'll assume that these EQP's will be used in my RA renewal calculation but for data purposes I'll have to keep track of the EQP's that I generate as well as the total EQP's, just in case I don't requalify this year for some reason.

Do we have any insight into the period which will be used? I had some pricy IC stays last December so am very much hoping for a December 2017 look at stays 1/12/16 to 30/11/17.

If that is the period being looked at I am probably good to qualify already at $10k if for a full Jan to Dec, I don't see how they make the cut in time for the end of Dec current expiry.

If selectin n.n %age of Ambassadors for RA based on total 2017 $$$ spend, IHG won't have that $$$/EQP figure on Dec 1st so can't/won't need review one month early any more. IHG definitely stated RA program is annular

So much easier from now on for IHG I.T. simplistic-check to just promote/qualify for RA the required top n.n %age of Ambassadors based of yearend IC earned EQPs of all Ambassadors. (A bit like for Spire, Platinum rach new calendar year)

I feel for all of us, as we lack the empirical knowlege from 2010 or earlier we had before of 55/20/3 becoming 60/20/3 then probably 75/30/3 and we don't want to miss out on RA by a measly us$500-1000 underspend, so it is likely borderline RAs will ere on side of caution and "overspend/overqualify" which is exatly what IHG want.
I think this years wiki renewal spend values will be more meaningful that last year, when rules changed midyear on the RA scheme.

RA qual/renewal could be handled like IHG did regards 2016 RAs that were expiring 31st Dec 2016 using spending period period Jan2016-Dec2016. IHG could also renew like under old method with a review 1month before expiry for months Dec16-Nov17.

IHG simply left the RA flagg on our accounts without extending the RA expiry date into January (1st - 3rd), then on 4th Jan 2017, set those that qualified/renewed as RA to Dec2017 expiry, based on Jan16-Dec16 12month earning period.

nb
Of course curious thing is IHG App rotated cards showing expiry as 1st Dec 2017 though I think that is just an IT error
