As a Plat, I received 500 points for my last Staybridge Suites stay in the US.

The hotels must need to lighten up about using them. At HI Stratford the bar doubles up as a cake stall. However, the bar staff were insistent that I had to have a bag of crisps with my glass of wine (!) and not any of the other items laid out.

I've often tried to use my voucher for a coffee at the bar and been refused on the basis a coffee wasn't a "soft drink". I could happily have a pint or a spirit, glass of wine... but not a black coffee... normally fixed in a flash via duty manager.
It's nice to have a good coffee from a proper machine rather than the sachets in your room so would also like to see them clarify you can use it for hot drinks too as that would be a far greater benefit for me and avoid the hassle of seeking a manager to overrule the bar staff.

Maybe they should standardise on the welcome drink too.

Initially I was taking the drink but as others have said there are so many restrictions on it it's beyond belief. I'm not an alcoholic but I prefer a decent glass of wine not a small test tube of it or a half pint so I switched back to taking the points. I've also had the coffee debate in a few of them and decided it's not worth the hassle

HIX @ Seattle Airport
I've never heard of an HIX where one could get (an alcoholic) drink? Does the breakfast room double as a bar over there? I suppose there may be HIX properties in the States that sell beer (or wine) in their pantry, but not ones where they have poured drinks! Until now, all "IHG members" (presumably meaning elites) here got water/juice and a candy bar or bag of microwave popcorn (or similar food item), so the points are at present an alternative "recognition" option; we'll see if Platinums get both soon, as per the announcement.

All European HIXs have a full bar service during the day and evening - an increasing number also provide a limited food service in the evening as well

Hmmm I never had a Points offer! The only time I got a voucher was when I was in HI @ Sazlburg, Austria (2011) and they gave me a basket of chocolate and fruits (I was Gold that time). Everything else was free water, which isn't bad at all as water is usually expensive!
