United Nonrefundable International Ticket

I am new on Flyertalk so any help and direction would be greatly appreciated. I recently bought two international nonrefundable flight tickets, I bought the recommended travel insurance and found out that I can no longer go on that trip. Is there a way to get credit or get as much back as possible from the airline? Thank you in advance!

What do the T&Cs of your policy say? What is the reason you cannot travel? Did you buy the policy after you purchased the tickets or before? We need a lot more information before we can help you.

United Nonrefundable International Ticket

Call United Airlines and tell them you cannot make the trip. they will cancel the ticket and, for most tickets, you can apply a portion of the ticket value to another international ticket issued and flown within 12 months. Note that there are exceptions for some consolidated or discounted tickets in which the full value is forfeited.

Then make a claim with the insurance. if the policy covers cancellations (either for a covered reason or if the policy is a "cancellation for any reason policy") then they will typically cover 75% of the cost.

LondonElite: The reason is not covered under the policy's covered reasons. When I purchased the travel insurance I read that trip cancellation is covered but did not see that it's not covered for any reason. I bought the policy when I purchased the ticket. It was one of the options on the United's website, Global Assistance Allianz.

FirstInFlight: Unfortunately, the insurance does not cover for any reason... Do you know on average what credit percentage off the value of the ticket I would get back from United since the ticket is nonrefundable?

You don't say why you can't travel, so I'll assume it's not illness or something like that but rather a scheduling conflict. You will need to call United to find out if you can apply some of the value of the ticket to a future booking, but be prepared for various levels of disappointment. It really depends on what fare class you bought and what the relevant fare conditions are. In most bookings you can find the complete fare rules in your electronic booking. It would be sensible for you to read those first. We don't know and can't give you a number or a percentage until we know your fare rules.

you'll have to contact United to see how much the fee is per ticket (last time I checked it was like $300+ for international tickets). The remaining balance you can use for a future United flight within 12 months.

Are you referring to the Contract of Carriage? There is a lot of information on it but there is nothing specific that addresses if the buyer cancels the ticket, mostly it covers if UA cancels the trip. Sorry for being so clueless. These airlines really get you. I honestly thought that since I purchased the travel insurance this would not be an issue.

Yeah, the insurance is really only good for very major things like significant illness. The cancel for any reason insurance is much more expensive and harder to find.

No; it's not the Contract of Carriage. It's the specific fare rules that apply to your particular fare.

No. Fare rules are different from contract of carriage.

This isnt the airlines getting you. When you buy life insurance, it doesn't cover death from all causes. When you buy homeowners insurance, it doesn't cover you taking a sledgehammer to your own roof.

No, you need to find the fare rules, these are ticket-class specific.

Allianz does have an option for cancel for any reason. It is clearly spelled out in the menu for policy options.
