Best miles for hawaiian island hops? Worth it?
Hi,
I'd like to island hop hawaii with flights as follows:
BigIsland -> Honolulu (3-4 days) -> Maui, oneway. Or,
BigIsland -> Maui (3-4 days) -> Honolulu, oneway.
Or any other permutation similar to above.
Point-to-point flights would cost me approximately $70-$100 x 2 x 2 people = $350-400ish.
I'm wondering if there is any mileage plan to optimize above with the layover on single one-way?
I have ample miles across various major US programs, but not Hawaiian Airlines miles. Even have Amex to transfer to Hawaiian if needed (although I was hoping to transfer those to Avios with the bonus). And looking at Hawaiian airlines credit card that has a $89 annual fee so not sure if its worth it right now for me to apply when there's so many other better credit card offers around.
If nothing seems like a good redemption I'll just pay cash for it I guess.
Thanks.

To begin with, see which airlines' miles you can redeem HA travel with. To begin with, HA's partners are
- American Airlines
- China Airlines
- Korean Air
- JetBlue
- Virgin America
- Virgin Atlantic
- Virgin Australia

Mileage costs for inter-island flights (on HA metal):
AA 5,000 miles one-way
UA 6,000 miles one-way
HA 7,500 miles one-way
There are others but that's what I recall offhand. Availability is usually pretty decent.

Thanks. Yes, I do have 24k United miles which would be perfect for this, unless I get a United credit card and aim to get an international first class flight or something as a longterm thing.
My question was around the fact if I can use the 3-4 day layover as a single somehow? Thus reducing the number of miles needed?
Also thanks to the poster pointing out Jetblue works on Hawaiian flights! I have some throwaway points sitting there so will call Jetblue to see what the redemption is on them.

Whether it's worth it to redeem depends, I think, on whether you're trying to save cash or whether you have the budget to pay for the flights and would rather save the miles for something else.
