its possible but you are cutting it fine....

i'm assuming both flights are international, correct????

if so then you get out of the airport by 9am, reach the taj around 1pm, spend a couple of hours there & start back by around 3pm & make it back to the airport around 7pm....if all goes well then its possible, however its not something i would personally risk....

Your bottlenecks will be the morning Delhi rush hour, the fact that the taxi will have to get a permit to operate in UP (so the taxi has to make a detour and go to the RTO just after entering UP and stand in line there) and the rush hour on the way back. Spending 8 hours in traffic to have just 90 minutes to see the Taj sounds a bit much.

India is not the country where you make assumptions about the flow of traffic. The Taj certainly justifies more time than your plan would allow

because if you get stuck in traffic, which is a real possibility, then you will miss your flight....

OP, Drop the Taj, fraught with delay dangers and anxiety.

Opt for a few hours of sight seeing in Delhi. Fascinating. The temple of Akshardham supposedly rivals Taj visitirs in numbers ( Look up BAPS.Org)

Google for tour operators and set it up in advance. Lot less headaches !

thanks all-if traffic is so bad for a delhi tour would it be best to use the metro?

Metro is a good option if you know where you are going and how far are the places you want to visit. From the metro station you can find cabs and auto rickshaws (tuk-tuks, a ride is a must !)

You can decide ( from guide books, google) what you want to see, get a lunch at one of the five star hotels restaurants (Taj, Oberoi....) etc.

Return and unwind in the lounge.

Make sure you are carrying ticket or ITN, orr BP and passport for reentry to the terminal.
Do check visa requirements at the Consulte here.

Yes, it can be done BUT get a good car and a driver and stick to an itinerary.

Only go to the Taj and then head back to Delhi.

The good thing is the airport is actually nearby the highway that goes down south to the Taj and it's at least a 2 hour journey each way (4 hours).

If you can leave by 10.30am-11.00am, spend about an hour at the Taj and then hop back in the taxi and head straight back to Delhi airport, you will be fine.

Meals: you may need to stop for a meal but keep it short if possible and get to the airport with lots of time to spare. We got stuck lining up to get through passport control for our flight and it was a 45 minute wait to get through with only 4 counters open for both economy and business/first passengers...it can happen so don't take clearing immigration for granted.

Have fun if you do go to the Taj.
