India Transit - Seperate Tickets With Checked Bag

India Transit - Seperate Tickets With Checked Bag
Hi Everyone,
I have stumbled across an opportunity to gain some air miles at a good price next week on my way back to Qatar.
I would be flying Abu Dhabi - BOM on Etihad and then BOM-Colombo-Doha on Sri Lankan 5 hours later.
The problem lies in that I have a British Passport and cannot arrange a transit visa in time for my trip back and I will have a checked bag.
I can also do this transit in Delhi or Chennai.
Will I be able to get my bag re-checked at a transit desk at any of these airports? Or will Etihad even be able to check it all the way through, at least to Colombo?

etihad will not check your bag all the way....trying this on separate tickets with a checked bag is not a good idea....
