Terminal 3 at DEL handles all international flights as well as domestic flights of Air India, Vistara and Air Asia India. You can transit D-I, I-D, I-I and D-D.

I-I transfer desks are open as of August 2022.

Below are the details for transit within T3.

A. Domestic to international transit at T3:

If both your domestic and international flights are on a single ticket, your baggage will be checked through at the origin airport itself and you should get your onward boarding passes there as well.
At DEL there are 5 ways to get from arrivals to departures (one level up), listed here in order of least walking to most walking.

1. Domestic - intl transfer gate: After you deplane from your domestic flight (or get off the bus) and go down the escalator (or stay on the same level coming from a bus) there is a special facility for transit passengers in the hall with the copper hands on the wall (red gate in the image below). It leads directly to immigration counters and security check after which you can access departure gates, lounges etc. Service on this entry point are hit or miss, but will save you a lot of walking. There are AI and AF-KL agents roaming the queues and will fast track you if running late. However, this only works if you already have your boarding pass for your International flight, have checked your luggage through from your point of origin, and have less than 4 hours between your domestic and international flights. If you are on separate tickets, have more than 4 hours for your international flight, or the lines are too long try one of the other options below.

2. Transfer desk in the middle of the arrivals concourse: always crowded. Here you could theoretically drop your bags and take the lift up to the security or checkin desks. Its a night mare, never used it due to crowding.

3. The escalator & lift on the international end: collect your bags, turn LEFT when you exit the first set of doors after the baggage belt. At the complete end of the concourse a lonely CISF jawan polices that way up. S/he will check if you have a international onward ticket/BP or send you packing to the other ways. Once you go up you get into a glass walled holding pen with yet another CISF checkpoint that will only let you ínto the checkin area if your flight is in 4h or less.
4. Escalator & lift on the domestic end: collect your bags, turn right when you exit the first set of doors after the baggage belt. At the complete end of the concourse a lonely CISF jawan polices that way up. S/he will check if you have a domestic onward ticket/BP or send you packing to the other ways. Once you go up everything is cordoned off and you are shown out the terminal by the CISF guy sitting at the glass door to the checkin area you end up curbside and have to enter the terminal again.

5. Just walking out as if you want to go to Delhi: here you exit the terminal and pretend to be a regular pax arriving in Delhi. Once you exit there are walk escalators where you push your cart on and get transported to the departure level. Select one of the many gates where there are no major lines and enter the checkin area.

B. International to domestic transit at T3:

For Air India I-D flights where your domestic flight is from AI 010-399 or 900-999, you will follow the procedure for I-I transfers (see this for details). Otherwise follow the procedure given below.

For all other flights, you will go through immigration in Delhi. After immigration you have to collect your bags and go through customs. Then follow steps 3, 4 or 5 in the section above.

Security will generally not allow entry into the domestic terminal until T-4 (four hours before the departure of your flight).

Transit hotel: For overnight transit (int'l flight arriving at night and domestic connection departing following morning), the transit hotel within Terminal 3 (IHG Holiday Inn Express) is perfectly acceptable. And the views of the tarmac when having the included breakfast aren't bad. You need to have a domestic flight departing from T3 in order to use it. The T-4 restriction does not apply to use the transit hotel. But it goes for quite a premium in rates over what the other hotels in the area cost (if willing to exit the terminal building for overnight stays). To reach, turn right after Customs and look for the Holiday Inn Express help desk inside the terminal. Staff will escort you to the hotel and help with other formalities.

For other terminals:
T2 is a (long) walk from T3. Exit the terminal, turn left and follow the signs.
T1 is ~8km by road and takes about 15 minutes by taxi. There is also a shuttle bus outside the terminal which is free if you are a woman or have a boarding pass for an onward flight, and costs INR 25 otherwise. There are no airside connections.

C. International to International transfer

After landing look for the board saying "International Transfers" (DO NOT go through immigration).

1. If you are on a single ticket and already have boarding pass in hand with "DT" (Direct Transfer) printed on it, walk past the transfer desks and go through transit security. Then you can proceed to the departure lounges and gates. Note: if your boarding pass does not have "DT" printed on it, you need to talk to the transfer desk, otherwise the I-I security checkpoint will likely not let you through and send you back to the transfer desk.

2. If you have separate tickets or don't have your onward boarding pass in hand, you have to go to the transfer desk where the airline staff will check documents and issue your onward boarding pass. You cannot check-in online or get an e-Boarding Passes for international flights out of India. Check-in generally opens 4 hours before and closes 60-75 minutes before departure. Then go through transit security as in point 1.

3. There are no priority security lanes in transit security so it is advisable to keep adequate time (>2 hrs) between connecting flights even if you are in F or J.

4. If you have separate tickets, in addition it is advisable to hold an Indian visa or e-visa as you may be denied boarding at origin otherwise.

5. A transit hotel for overnight stays (up to 24 hours) is available after transit security.

Thanks. After reading the earlier reports about this system, I am worried that 1:40 may not be enough. Fortunately, after looking into it more, the change fee is only $20 on Jet Airways for this (cheap) flight, so I'll just book the earlier one. :-)

I made one booking but have flights with two separate companies - Air India and then Virgin. As I understand it, I won't be able to check luggage in all the way through, or collect both boarding passes at Kathmandu airport..
So - I am wondering if I need a transit visa? My transit time is 2.5 hours and, if necessary, I can have inly hand luggage (if this will make the process easier and faster.) However, if anyone has definitive information about how this works, I would be really grateful. I have read all I can but haven't found anyone with a complete answer about transit visa or personal experience of this. I have a British passport so normally we always need a visa to enter India but I won't leave the airport - only need to get a boarding pass for my second flight and maybe collect/re-check bag. Please help! A little worried about this!!!
Technically you need a transit visa, with hand luggage only you may be able to make it.

I'm connecting from MAA on AI43 to LX147 to ZRH. MAA flight arrives at 23.45 and ZRH departs at 02.05.

1) I assume this is a pretty easy connection these days?
2) Is the Lufthanasa Business Lounge worth visiting? Do non *G have access to the SilverKris Lounge?
3)Is the Air India flight one of the International Connector Flights? Does this change where my exit immigration formalities take place? My bags will be tagged through correct(same ticket)?

1. yes
2. yes and no, I prefer the AI lounge as a location, the LH food is slightly better. The SQ lounge closes around 22.30.
3. Yes, if same ticket, then immigration takes place in MAA and luggage is checked thru.

I've looked through the extensive information on the forums, but I'd love a second opinion:

I am booked on EK 517, DEL-DXB (where I have a connection to JFK). Departs DEL at 16:10 on Jan 14th.

I want to book AI 476, JDH-DEL. Arrives in DEL at 13:20 on Jan 14th.

That gives me 2:50 minutes for the transfer. Flightstats says that AI 476 is delayed by an average of an hour, on time just 11% of the time .

I also have a bag that probably needs to be checked -- a large backpack that's probably over 7kg. And I can't check-through with Air India and Emirates, AFAIK?

Any thoughts? Otherwise I need to fly in to DEL on the same flight a day earlier.

Don't risk it. With fog disrupting operations this time of the year you need extra buffer.

Ok, thanks Oliver. Especially considering the change in fare I'd probably have to pay Emirates, not worth it. Maybe I'll take a train.

After reading this thread I want to make sure I have this right. I'm doing an I>I transfer at DEL in two days. Flying SYD-DEL-DXB. US passport and do not hold a visa for India. Currently scheduled as a 2:00 layover. One ticket, all AI operated and coded.

1. When I get off the plane from SYD I have to find a "transfer desk" and get some stamp on my BP? Will I be allowed through security without this stamp?
2. I have read conflicting reports on what to do when I get in from SYD. I thought I was stuck in the transit lounge but based on reading this thread it looks like I can get through security and into the departures area of T3 so I can actually use a *A lounge? (Note: I'm in paid J but also *G). This would be great.

What happens if my SYD-DEL flight is delayed and I miss the connection to DXB? AI only has one flight a day to DXB from DEL so I'd be stuck for 24 hours in the transit lounge with no access to a lounge?

Thanks,
RM

When you arrive as intl pax in DEL you initially walk on long walkways to the center of the terminal. Just before immigration you will encounter a number of AI employees shouting 'intl transfers!' just ask them and they will show you the way to transit security. If you don't have the connecting BP, you can get it at a transfer desk. If you have the BP, there are two AI agents with lists in hand who take a look at your passport and BP and check you off the list for that flight (they know who is connecting where). You then proceed for a CISF/Indian security check after attaching new handluggage tags to your bags (so the CISF have something to stamp). After security, you take an escalator up a level and then are in the general departure gates shopping and lounge paradise, where you shop or relax in the AI/LH/SQ *G lounge(s).

If your SYD flight is badly delayed, AI will rebook you onto IATA alternatives which in your case will be EK. In such case you have to sort that out at the transfer desk. The ground handling agent of EK should be able to give you a BP there.

Two linked questions about domestic to international transit:

1) There's a lot of info in this thread about domestic to intl on the same airline, and intl to intl. I am connecting from AI (domestic) to LH (to Munich and onward) with a 5.5 hour layover. Are the transfer counters able to process LH tickets, especially so far in advance of the connecting flight?

2) Once in the international wing of T3, it looks like there are 3 Star Alliance lounges open at that time, and I am *G. In my past experience, lounges in India have required invitations. Is it possible to visit multiple lounges on the same departure? Is it necessary, then, to get multiple invitations?

Thanks.

If its on the same ticket AI will issue you the BP for LH. If not, you will get the BP at the transfer desk. LH desks open around 8pm already.

In T3 you can lounge hop with just the LH BP and your *G card. Note the SQ lounge closes at 10:30pm, so not much joy there.

Hey everyone,
I've got a flight on the 20th from LHR to NRT via DEL. It's a fairly long connection (~19 hours) and I've only just seen about all of this transit visa stuff. Feeling fairly screwed, as there's no way I'd be able to get the visa in time from the looks of it. What do you guys think might happen with these details.

Both flights are booked on the same ticket. Both flights are ran by Air India. Both would be arriving and departing from Terminal 3.

From what I've read it might come down to sitting around in a room for the whole connection time, unless I can get a boarding pass for the Delhi connection from LHR.

Any advice is massively helpful. Cheers!
