first time in Delhi, for tourists (not business) three days . Was looking at SPg properties for points but only Maurya available at 10000 and it is for standard room... for about 11000 to 12000 inr the Taj Mahal ( club room) or ITC one are also available. Any ideas about these hotels or any others for about same cost? thanks. Also the luxury tax issue has me totally confused.

Luxury tax on hotel rooms in Delhi are based on some kind of rack rate of the room -- as filed with the government -- to which you are assigned at check-in.
All of the accommodations you mentioned are decent by Delhi standards.

re luxury tax.... I understand the "rack rate" concept but I have emailed each hotel trying to determine what the tax would be ahead of time to be able to have an idea and no surprise. No hotel has responded.
Re Hotels... decent by Delhi standards but which would you think best. Also the Meridien is about the same price... (but no points)

I don't know whether that's the case anymore. my last stay at the IC Nehru Place in August was only charged about 10% of the actual rate paid (around Rs 700 I think) even though the booking confirmation said tax would be Rs 2500 (which would have been based on the rack rate). I was surprised when I saw the bill.

Have stayed in all hotels you mentioned...each offers something different...someone else mentioned le meridian..its the "cool" hotel with very modern lobby and amenities, smaller rooms but overall a great hotel (but they charge 1500 INR per DAY if you want a dvd player in your room!) Taj Mahal hotel is upscale and club rooms are nice...ITC is literally next to Taj and also very upscale, room size varies by category but service is impeccable (as it is at Taj)...on a personal notel, i prefer ITC (their breakfast buffet is amazing!), but all three (Taj/Meridian/ITC) are within a block of each other and centrally located, clean, safe and 5*...
as for the "luxury tax", this is one of the things you really need to figure into any rate in delhi and in a few other cities in india...you will be charged 12.5% on the RACK rate of the room (unless you use points, in which case its included, but be careful with the SPG cash+points option bc you STILL get charged tax on the rack rate, which at times almost doubles the rate you are paying!)...rack rate at the meridian in november for a standard room was pretty high (I think it was 14,000 or 15,000 INR)...
Also, many SPG phone reps will tell you something different, but the hotel will tell you the truth. if you have a doubt, call them directly...also, for the same reason, beware of the "free" upgrade..you will be hit with the luxury tax on the rack rate of the UPGRADED room at checkout...

The Le Meridien is not close to the Taj Palace/ITC Maurya.
Anyway, I stay at the Le Meridien some 20+ nights a year. Nice hotel. Closer to attractions than the ITC/Taj. I stayed at the Taj Palace twice a few years ago. Fine hotel but can't earn/burn SPG or Hyatt points so I avoid it. ITC is a great hotel. ITC One rooms are great but the lounge is lacking. The lounge at Le Meridien is great. You can't go wrong with any of these properties. You can add the Hyatt Regency into the mix as well. Avoid the Sheraton New Delhi. Ok hotel but a step down from the ones you are considering.

Presume you're referrring to Taj Palace. If you've not experienced club flr at a Taj or Oberoi property... highly highly recommend it. Specially Taj Palace.
My american colleagues think Maurya is overated (with bill's so called fav restaurant Bukhara). I tend to mildly agree. Lot of flight crews use it. The tower rooms are better. In room massage chair and all that.

He was referring earlier to the Taj Mahal hotel on Mansingh Road, within walking distance to Khan Market (although not as close a walk as the Taj Ambassador hotel next to Sujan Singh Park).
Airlines use most all of the major internationally-branded hotels in Delhi.

Thanks all for the info.
If i throw other Taj properties ie Palace or Ambassador into the mix does that change any recommendation?

The Taj Ambassador is an ok lower end property compared to the Taj Palace and Taj Mahal hotels. [In terms of physical plant, the Ambassador would be a category 3.5 or 4; the Taj Palace a 4.5 or 5; and the Taj Mahal a 5.]
I would rank the Taj Mahal hotel somewhat higher than the Taj Palace, and I would rank both of those a category higher than the Taj Ambassador hotel although I prefer the Taj Ambassador's location to the Taj Palace (and even over the Taj Mahal hotel).

my suggestion would be either the itc maurya or the taj mahal hotel....flip a coin....you can't go wrong with either....also, the new hilton garden inn is about to open later this month....i went to see the place this weekend & really liked it....i think it opens on the 26th or 28th of this month so if that fits in with your travel schedule then its another great option, given a room rate of only rs. 6,000 per night....also its right next to delhi's best mall....
