i like this part the best about the article:

The AI Delhi-SFO-Delhi flight now does a round trip of the world as it flies back to India over the Atlantic to get tailwinds on both the outbound and inbound flights.
there is something cool about having flown all over the world....

EK now flys DXB-AKL 8824 miles great circle route
DEL- SFO 7706 miles great circle route

Airlines do not always actually fly the great circle route.

The article specifically states that DXB-AKL is ordinarily longer, but the point is the AI flight is now routing via the Pacific rather than Atlantic from DEL-SFO to take advantage of tailwinds, thus making it longer than DXB-AKL.

So it's true and official. Good on AI.

Interestingly, the distance flown over the pacific (versus atlantic) is longer, although the flying time is shorter!

Will I earn miles based on GC map (shorter Atlantic route) or actual miles flown?

Earning is always as per the great circle distance between the cities.
