Extortionate fee to choose seat

Check in for my flight tomorrow is finally open but when I go to choose my own seat on the flight map part of check in, it's charging me $37 for it!
Hardly any seats seem to be booked up at the moment (as they would be highlighted in red I'm assuming?) so is it with just turning up tomorrow when I actually physically check in and ask for my preferred window seat at the desk instead?

If you don't value securing your preferred seat in advance at $37 then request at check in if available

Yes, just select your seat when checking in.

As I was looking through the plane map and going through the seating selection I must have accidently selected my preferred seat 35L and now it seems to have saved that particular seat on my booking and not the automatically free allocated seat 43J.
However I guess until I actually pay the $37 my seat is not confirmed?

Should I be able to sort this out as you've both said when I get to the airport and check in and select my seat for free??

If you selected a preferred seat and not paid for it, you have not finished the transaction. At this point I would just wait until check-in.

Well, I asked if I could be seated next to my partner when I checked in at the counter at MAD (a couple of years back) and was told it would cost us €70. Needless to say, we were split up into different locations on the plane despite being on the same PNR. Just reinstate free seat selection and up the fares a bit, it would the whole experience a lot nicer.
