I m looking for flights to South America by end of the year (ECE, MVD,SCL) - when I check seatmaps they sometimes show the old config. is there a way to predict where I can go with the Plus seats for sure?

Not really, it is quite unpredictable. The best you can do is look at the history of your intended flight on FlightAware to try to guess the frequency. And even then you never know. Of course, with the new planes the probability of ending up in the old configuration is decreasing.

If you are going in J it's certainly worth the risk since the old seats aren't that bad.

Sorry, I messed up my types. I meant the 330s, I edited the post to reflect the reality.
The 343s are the planes you want to avoid as they are the old configurations. They were planned to be retired with the new 330s but current fuel prices mean they are going to keep going for longer with no plans to be refurbished.

Yesterday the purser came over for a chat and asked "is everything still working with your seats?"
Always a struggle with my fear-of-flying missus to convince her that the wings or engines won't fall off when the seats look like they were installed in the 70s.

I don't know, they are old but I think they are comfortable in J (the main flaw is probably the old IFE). The real problem is if you get them in Y... I normally fly economy but I've managed to avoid the old configuration since a 2011 flight to Boston. Since then my only flight with the old cabins was my MAD-JFK return after Christmas, thankfully an odd occassion when I had used points to book J.

So, just another newbie to the brand popping over to ask what everyone asks...seeing the "346" designation on my MAD-ORD for December 2016, along with the old seat map on EF, but guessing that that is just a placeholder for wayyyyy out and the odds of getting this old product are quite low by the time this rolls around. Confirm/deny?

Now I am really confused! We are on IB Flight 6250 on June 10, JFK-MAD. I used AA miles for the trip. We are on a 345 (both IB and AA websites indicate this aircraft), yet we have seats 3A and 3C. How is that possible?

My best guess is they are doing something weird with the codes for 345 and 346 for the times after the refurbishments are completed and it's just some weird error. It will only be the 343 in the old config at that point. KZI is the last frame and is currently in the shop now.

EZE-MAD (IB 6856) in early April shows in EF as a 342, which from this thread I understand to be the new A340 configuration. The EF seat maps shows only seats 1-4 in J. IB and BA's MMB both show me in 5A, which EF says doesn't exist. If I tell BA I want to change my seat, it brings me an IB page with a different PNR, and that shows me in 1A. Very strange. The IB MMB also says I can not select seats.
Is there a seat 5A?
Is seat 1A or 5A good for a solo traveler?

As I recall they were supposed to be retired but they are basically just being kept around while fuel is so cheap before being retired. So they are living on borrowed time and will not be refurbished.
